Overlong and Under-Edited

In my opinion this book was overlong, under-edited, and monotonous. A lot of repetition and interchangeable scenes could have been cut out. There was no growth, no progression from either character despite the length of the book. The dialogue is the same, the scenes are the same, every time is one last time but ends up the same way -- I get this as an illustration of their relationship, but *every time* this happens doesn't need to be in the book because it winds up exhausting and tedious to read. There was a hint of some interesting drama with Doc, but that apparently didn't go anywhere and we were left with never-ending two-dimensional scenes of the same exact thing.

The writing felt un-polished and amateur. It was tiring to read in Ignacio's voice. I don't mind unlikable characters, but Ignacio delves neither into himself nor into Narcisa in any meaningful way, sticking with the addiction/female succubus cliche. There were pages of the same exact description of their life and Narcisa's personality that were unnecessary and all phrased in the same way.

I felt like there was potential in this story, because it definitely had the seed of something great in Narcisa's character and in the illustration of romantic addiction, but it didn't really deliver.

The Blood of Poets

Red Smith really didn't say "Writing is easy. You just open a vein and bleed," but the line was so good that people have quoted his advice over and over and over again. If only they followed it! Today's market seems to be dominated by Creative Writing School graduates who consider a paper cut adequate bloodletting for their vocation. The result is arch prose and the glib ironies of living in a postmodern media cocoon. These folks wouldn't know a real conflict from a bad hair day, and the closest they will ever come to an Oedipal Karthasis is when they misplace their Armani eyeglasses and have to tear their eyes away from the tube in order to find them.

So thank god (or perhaps the devil) for a book like Narcisa, which plumbs the depths of a human sinkhole that makes contemporary tours of Hell look like a stroll through Beaver Cleaver's neighborhood. This book is not for those who faint at the sight of blood. This book has all the purgatorial torments of a Joe Coleman painting described in the acid-pitted prose of a Charles Bukowski. Narcisa not only hacks up the frozen seas within us, it serves up the crushed ice with a draught of absinthe and a hot shot for after, puts a gun to your head and says, "Drink." You won't be sorry you did, but you'll be wondering what hit you when you turn the final page and close the book, its surreal laughter echoing in your head. This is what real writing is all about. It's raw, it's rasping, it shaves away illusions like a potato grater on bared skin, but the bloodletting is purgative. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger - and funnier too.

It is high time that this book, which has become a collector's item, be reissued. Originally available in a small press run, Narcisa quickly joined the ranks of other subterranean classics such as those issued by City Lights, and thus it continues that vital tradition which brought us the Beats and their offbeat descendents. But Narcisa is also heir to some of the most central figures of American literature. Like Melville's Ishmael or Cormac McCarthy's "kid," its protagonist is a lone searcher wandering through an apocalyptic landscape at once deeply intimate and intriguingly alien, risking everything to steal some fire from the malevolent forces ranged against him. Transgressors pay dearly for the treasures they bring back to the tribe, and judging from the terrible beauty of this particular prize, the author certainly opened more than one vein. It's that good.

A New Classic Of Outlaw Literature

“Between us, there always seemed to exist some deeper identification, born of a deep, unspoken bond; an underlying sense of kinship. It was as if loving Narcisa was like loving some wayward, feral strand of myself; a distorted funhouse mirror image of my own brutalised, mangled, forgotten inner child, restructured into rude juvenile delinquent female form, with a crooked, charismatic smile of mischief at the end of her fuzzy pink tongue.”

Jonathan Shaw’s Narcisa is a classic tale of addiction. Not of drug addiction, although there is plenty of that riddling its decrepit, cobble-stoned sub-tropical streets, but of the addiction of one person for another. What, in most other instances, would be called “love”, although you won’t find many referring to this book as a love story. That is, however, exactly what it is; as buried as it may be beneath a thousand grimy layers of depravity, dysfunction, violence and insanity, Narcisa is a far more realistic, accurate, and pure portrayal of love than whatever turgid s***Hollywood or Jodi Picoult is churning out these days. Shaw captures the side of love that sends Hollywood running for the hills, the tortuous, strung-out junkie experience of knowing that someone or something is pure poison and loving it, needing it anyway.

Ignacio Valencia Lobos, or Cigano, is a Yamaha-riding, Gypsy-wandering bandito poet who returns to the Brazil of his rampant youth and finds his heroin/e in the form of Narcisa, a schizophrenic crack-smoking esoteric-philosophising teenage prostitute, and down the cosmic rabbit hole he goes. Narcisa charts the endlessly circling existential hell Cigano finds himself in, fully aware of how bad Narcisa is for him and yet unable to let her go.

This novel reads like a long-lost literary classic, and references to the Internet and mobile phones feel almost idiosyncratic in a tale that would otherwise slide in easily beside older works by Kerouac, Burroughs, Miller, Fante and Bukowski. Narcisa, reads, in fact, a lot like Bukowski, in its world-weariness and hard-edged skid row charm, that is, if Bukowski had ever gotten out of LA or done anything besides drifting between bars, menial jobs and cold water apartments. Narcisa shares with Bukowski and the Beats the same deep-burning poetic flare and earnest obsession with the types of people and experiences that most of society shuns or turns a deliberately blind eye to, but it also has a deep-rooted connection with its geographic setting: the exotic, equal parts beautiful and dangerous muggy urban jungle of Rio De Janeiro, and a knowledge that can only come from personal experience.

Jonathan Shaw has had one hell of a life, and it fills this work of fiction like blood pumping through its veins. The son of legendary jazz musician Artie Shaw, Shaw spent his youth wandering the back roads and alleyways of South America much like the hero of his novel before making a name for himself in the US as one of the most revered tattoo artists of all time, counting notable figures such as Johnny Depp, Iggy Pop, Jim Jarmusch, Marilyn Manson and Kat Von D amongst his patrons and fans. Shaw eventually turned from skin to manuscript, and developed almost overnight cult status in the world of underground literature, with the first edition of Narcisa, released through musician and author Wes Eisold’s (American Nightmare, Cold Cave) indie publishing house Heartworm Press in 2007, selling out almost immediately, with out-of-print copies now going for as much as $300 a pop on Amazon and Ebay.

While Internet resellers continue to make a fortune off his work, Shaw, who doesn’t even own a copy of his own book, has returned to South America and the nomad lifestyle, going where the road and his Harley take him, all the while tinkering away at his next projects, Scab Vendor, a collection of autobiographical tales dealing with his early years and his time spent in the tattoo business, and a new, completely revised and rewritten version of Narcisa. Both are to be released in the near future on major publishers, hopefully so that the world at large, and those who don’t have the time or money to seek out his ultra-rare early releases, will finally be able to discover the destined-to-be classic works of this literary master and true iconoclast.

Required reading that I actually enjoyed

This was required for a class, but frankly it was interesting enough I was even willing to read the chapters not assigned. It's well organized and researched, and the writing straddles the line between "academic journal article" and "interesting newspaper article." It clearly conveys a lot of information without boring or overwhelming the reader. My professor supplemented this book with ch 3 of Vivien Schmidt's "The Futures of European Capitalism" in order to help us better understand how European economies differ from the USA and each other. Despite the fact that I didn't think I'd be particularly interested in this subject, it turned out to be one of the most interesting classes I've taken (I am a senior in college working on my BA in Political Science.)

Good marketable book outside, not so good inside

I expected more about this book, firts of all, only a quarter of the book contain the elementary Marketing principles and the remainder only cases. But the worse, there is not connection between cases and theory, not just one case example analysis, not reference at all in chapters with cases. If I had wanted to buy cases of marketing management without analysis, I were going to the Harvard Bussiness online to buy the school cases.
Also in the back cover they say about "New Videos: Approximately 50% of the video segments are brand new for this edition", Sincerely I don't know where are those videos, no CD, no DVD, nothing in the website of book: [...] By the way, that website is too poor, in comparison to other website of books.
Summarizing too expensive book for few effective information.

Good book for a college course

This book got thirteen chapters covering 4Ps, marketing research, consumer behavior, market segmentation, integrated communication, distribution, personal selling, pricing, marketing of services, and global marketing.
There are four sections of cases, from short one to in-depth study.

I use this book as a college-level course. Final projects were done using these cases. Students like the book.
The book will be better if it includes fewer cases, but more thorough analysis of the cases.

Contrary to other critics here, I believe the book is very good.

Complete but completely dull

Half the time reading this book is like reading a dictionary. I think I must have read 100 sentences that begin with "XXX can be defined as .... ". The authors do a complete coverage of the topics but in such a dull and routine way it is hard to keep your attention on the reading. On a plus side, there are about 40 case analyses that are pretty good, but of course they weren't written by the authors. Of course if you're like most people, your professor has chosen this book and you have to get it whether you like it or not.

Freakonomics / Super Freakonomics shows you how the world works. Think Like A Freak shows you how to better live in the world.

If you're a fan of Freakonomics and Super Freakonomics, you'll love this book. Here's why:

Like many other people, after reading both of the Freakonomics books, I felt like I learned a ton, but I wasn't sure how it would apply directly to my life.

And that's okay. They weren't writing a self help book, and I read their work because I was genuinely curious in understanding how the world works.

But this book departs from their usual method of explaining how the world works and instead shows you how you can better live in the world.

And that's why I believe this is their best book yet.

Here's a little summary of what I learned:

1. In one chapter, the three hardest words in the english language, they talk about one of the main problems that plagues people today - the inability to say "I don't know." And they show you how it's a deadly combination because "cocky plus wrong" is a recipe for disaster. They then show you how to avoid making this mistake. They even give a word for word script you can use.

2. In another chapter, "WHat's your problem," they share the story of Kobayashi and how he became a professional hot dog - and food eater. They walked through his entire process and how he went on to eat 50 hot dogs when people thought eating 30 was impossible. And even though they're talking about hot dogs, you'll see how this can apply to everyone.

As an example, back when I started creating videos for Social Triggers TV, a friend of mine told me they were filming about 6 videos a day. And I thought, "Well, I'm new at this ther's no way ill get there." And I would film 3 videos a day. Eventually, as I got good, I got to the magic number - 6 videos in a day and I felt like I was on top of the world. Until I spoke to another friend who told me they do 15 or 20 videos in a day. I was SHOCKED. But I went back to the drawing board, refined my process, and eventually got up to 17 videos in a day.

I'm being vague here, mainly because I want you to read the book. But it's funny seeing how the same process I used to increase my video production was used by the hot dog champ as well.

3. And my favorite part of the book is when they talk about what they call "the once and done" technique. If you're a non-profit, you'll LOVE reading about this because you'll see how you can potentially increase donations a drastic amount by using this simple marketing tactic.

And that's it.

Great book and I suggest you buy it and read it.

Are you willing to start thinking like a freak? A great book for approaching life in a creative way.

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed reading this book. The way that the writers can intertwine different stories to make valid points is remarkable. It really does a good job of proving by observation how some things in life seem irrational, but ultimately make a lot of sense.

The only problems that I have with the book are the length, just over 200 pages, and it rehashes a lot of stuff that they go over in other works. This book is easy enough that you can probably read in one or two sittings and it is very captivating throughout. I really enjoyed the anecdotes they use to bring across the point of the book that everyone can benefit by thinking differently about the world (i.e. think like a freak).

One of the main things that I liked is how they describe the way children ask questions and are so curious about everything. Children don't have a set worldview and are eager to learn by asking a lot of questions. Parents often dismiss these questions when it might be valuable to see the world through a child's eyes and challenge set it stone opinions or thoughts.

The writers also make a good point about how the three hardest words in the English language are "I don't know" and how it should be okay to say these words. By applying these words to our lives, we will first of all lie a lot less and more importantly be able to demonstrate a willingness to find out answers to questions we simply don't know.

As I stated before, I wish that this book was longer, but I really did enjoy all that was written and would recommend "Think like a Freak" for those interested in challenging their current worldview and seeking to approach life in a creative way.

ESSENTIAL READING IN AN ELECTION YEAR DOMINATED BY INSANITY

I read the first Freakonomics and loved it. Somehow missed the second one, but WOW! Was this one great. Levitt and Dubner, a prominent economist and journalist respectively, are dedicated to the notion that decisions and actions should be based on fact, not supposition, strongly held belief, or political theology. In previous books, they have demonstrated their approach to solving world problems. In this one, they attempt to teach readers how to do it themselves.

Yes! Transform those strongly held but false beliefs into fact-based operating principles. What an amazing and refreshing concept! Especially after watching the political debates. I found the authors' insistence on nibbling at the edges of world problems and tackling doable tasks rather than pitching limited resources at conundrums that CAN'T be solved by mortals very refreshing. I also found Levitt and Dubner's just saying out loud that quitting is OK. Not only that, it's the right thing to do for many reasons, not the least avoiding dumping vast resources into solutions that won't work.

I read someone saying in a review of this book that it was sociology, not economics. Maybe, but I doubt ten readers could understand it if if was a "pure economics" tome. My first career was in economics. I've got a couple of degrees in the field and was the economic analyst for Santa Clara County (where San Jose CA is) back in the day. When I was working on my PhD many years ago, I could see that the mathematical branches of economics were becoming the high-status subsets of the profession. Yet they described reality less accurately than the kind that used words. I quit that PhD program when I realized what was happening in the field made no sense. That's when I found out quitting can be a good thing.

During this period, I chatted with a fellow whose PhD was in econometrics from one of the Ivies––he was a member of the anointed few. He told me that the best econometrics could do was predict the direction of an economic change, up, down or stays the same, not the amount. So, had Levitt dragged out the math, probably no one would know what he was talking about and it wouldn't yield any more accurate facts than the chatty approach. Freakonomics and Think like a Freak are blessed by Dubner, who can write the conclusions up in terms we can all understand. Stories are the best way of teaching/explaining. I don't know that the authors succeed in their task of giving people the tools to think/act based on fact, but the attempt sure is fun and interesting.

Eddie Landsberg is a Philly born and raised, Tokyo based Jazz organist, educator and music theorist who trained under Blue Note Recording Legend Big John Patton, Shirley Scott and others, and was a demonstrator for the Nord Electro. He writes from the perspective of an experienced studio musician, live performer as well as educator. His 7 Secrets of Jazz and Soul Method is has sold thousands of copies and has been used by students and players around the world for over 12 years.

A must-get for any aspiring jazz organist

This is a valuable text in that it lives up to its title and, indeed, demystifies the process of developing and playing solid bass lines on the organ. In addition to the walking jazz bass line, the author touched on other types of music such as bossa nova and gospel. I also appreciated the analysis sections for their logic and insight. Working with this text, my technique improved greatly and I am beginning to develop more facility in my playing. I did not give this 5 stars because this book needs a good editor: there are typos abound and at least one musical example left out a key part of the harmony presented. I would encourage the author, for any subsequent edition, to hire an editor. Otherwise, thanks so much for writing this text.

Great book on a topic which is not well explained elsewhere. Ultimately, I learned organ bass lines are not the same as carrying a baseline on a piano and "rules" must be broken.

~new match ups and tournaments All in all the stuff that this expansion adds is awesome without gettting to complex

Ok so first here's all the new stuff the game comes with;

~3 new teams from a division called the Putrid Players.
~The teams are Nurgle, Chaos Dwarves and Goblins!
~ An extra Score Board (to add a 5th Player)
~Stadiums (which add rules to each match)
~penalty cheating tokens and pnealty cards
~new ability called fouling
~ and a Referee
~ a few more team upgrades for the original teams.
~new match ups and tournaments

All in all the stuff that this expansion adds is awesome without gettting too complex.
I think this expansion is worth it just for the new teams, (love the goblins) and the extra player.
The new skill; fouling, lets you foul your opponents; which means you can look at a card in your opponent's hand and choose whether or not the opponent will discard it.

Now you also run the risk of getting penalties, which are negative effects after the matchups have been resolved.

The stadiums add restrictions to the matchups now. Here's a taste of the type of restrictions you'll encounter; no cheating or no one above 2 star power in that particular matchup. You can choose to break these rules at the cost of a penalty card, which i think gives you interesting choices.

The Ref. goes around handing out cheating tokens so it adds a little randomness to the game or you can use it to your advantage and or push your luck a little.
You can easily choose which parts of the expansion you want to add to the game.

The goblins are by far my favorite. There is a little bias because I love goblins. They're a little silly and have pogo sticks, chainsaws, and little Davinci style helicopters! THey're a little hard to play with but they dont feel unbalanced

If you already have the other expansion it might be too much for some people to add all the components. I personally don't think it's too much to track.
This game is awesome and the expansions don't disappoint!
