This book has a very practical approach to RPD construction. The many illustrations make the subject extremely comprehensible. It makes a good reference in dentist's professional library and very helpful to new graduates.

Foodies - this book will make you happy -UPDATED

This book is totally worth adding to your collection if you are a foodie or for giving to the dedicated home chef / serious cook. Great recipes and flavours. Not a book for your average Rachel Ray home cook, unless they are adventurous with their food and flavors, if they are, then they'll be very happy.

If you are reading this review then you probably already know who Pierre Gagnaire is. You may even have his other books, which are very pretty, coffee table book like and the recipes need DEDICATION and PATIENCE to produce. Those recipes are really for inspiration in the most.

What this book does is what the title says - bring you a world class chefs tastes and flavours into a more accesible format. The recipes are simple, many of them less than ten ingredients. Some prep maybe necessary for some of his basic sauces buy it's all very approachable and doable in the home kitchen. One or two are nicely challenging and complex.

MOST IMPORTANT: The recipes are awesome. Familiar and French, yet refreshing. Unexpected and incredibly inventive.

Note: Photography is lush but rarely of the dish at hand. Mostly of ingredients, process and the like. I kind of liked it.

I rarely leave reviews but this one so deserves a good one. It's a great tome and refreshing to one's cooking to read. You also get a great education with each recipe - the chef has educational and instructive notes for the chef about recognizing good produce, techniques and more.

Pierre Gagnaire Home Recipes Twist

Not Quite ready for the Home

Buying a cookbook that was originally published in French and then translated for the American market is always problematic. The result can be simply a word-for-word translation that most Americans will find difficult to follow. Usually there is an attempt to Americanize the recipes. How successful this is depends on the translator. There have been some notable mishaps where a book translated for the UK market was released into the American market and contained many British terms not familiar to Americans. The translator of "175 Home Recipes with a Twist" seems to fall into a third category. Instructions seem to have been rewritten into American grammar, but they describe processes in a French manner. The French assume that the cook has more knowledge than American recipe writers do. Experienced cooks will know what the term "refresh" means in the statement "drain, refresh, and set aside" that follows an instruction to cook some green beans in boiling water, but inexperienced cooks will have no idea.

Then there are simple grammatical errors. In the milk-fed lamb recipe on page 183, the fifth instruction tells the reader to "Pour over the wine, turn down the oven..." following the previous instruction as to how to cook the lamb for the first fifteen minutes. The instruction should start "Pour the wine over the lamb, turn down the oven..." Gagnaire is a very skilled chef, but I doubt if he is pouring the leg of lamb over the wine.

The other place the translations run into problems is in measurement conversions and ingredient descriptions. Most of this book's conversions are correct, but I found a number of noticeable errors. It was good that weights were not converted to volumetric measurements, but since most digital scales in use today have both English and metric settings, a reader would be wise to use the book's metric measurements at all times.

Ingredients should be described in more detail. The Mortadella Platter on page 188 calls for "strong mustard." Anyone who has frequented a marché know that this refers to "moutard forte," a standard and very common type of mustard found in almost every French home. For the American marketplace, a description like "strong, Dijon-style mustard" would better. On a line above is the term green beans. Any Francophile knows that this refers to "haricots vertes," a variety of beans that are substantially different from the modern blue lake bean commonly available in the United States.

If you are the type of cookbook user where the pictures matter, this book may not be for you. The pictures generally don't represent finished dishes, but reflect the ingredients and processes that go into some of the preparations. Many are close-ups that are popular with today's food photographers. Most appear at a glance to be full page, but there are also numerous pages with four equal-sized images filling the page. All the images are vertical, so in a number of cases, horizontal pictures have been rotated to fit the vertical space. And in at least one instance, a full-page image is upside down (page 119).

If you like to read cookbooks for entertainment, this may not be for you. There are no head notes or anecdotes accompanying the recipes. The book is divided into three main sections: breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This has forced a somewhat artificial division of the recipes. I have to wonder why soups are included in lunch but not dinner or why fruit compotes are for breakfast and not also for dinner.

So with all my negativity, why did I purchase this book? To obtain the French-language version would have cost 3-1/2 times more. Also, the French version comes with a CD of music under the title "Bande Originale: 175 Recettes, 1 Heure de Musique." I wasn't interested in the music. At one of the restaurants I worked at in France, we prepared some special meals with recipes from other Michelin-starred restaurants in the country. I always remember the time I spent interpreting Gagnaire's recipes, even with one of his staff in attendance. Some were winners, others not. But all were a bit off the wall. I was hoping for some ideas from these recipes, and I did get a few. I simplified his recipe for a lemon chiffon cake to make bite-sized cake pops that I flavor with a variety of syrups. I find his recipe for beef tataki interesting in that he adds a little beet puree to soy sauce-mirin-sake marinade, which he thickens and uses as a sauce instead. I can think of a number of preparations that I can derive from this.

dreadful, uselss cookbook

175 recipies ..but all are dreadful combinations of ingredients or totally obvious little mixtures of ingredients for which no cook would need instructions. An example of the former is a salad of aloe vera, green mango, dried appricots, chopped fennel, and tofu covered in corn syrup (no amount specified) and covered with chopped cilantro. Examples of the latter are Orange, grape and pear salad, which consists of three oranges, two pears, 2 oz of muscat grapes, 3 tablespoons of spiced syrup (a simple syrup with spices), 3 tablespoons of red currant jelly and optional orange juice or forbidden rice balls which consists of cold forbidden rice mixed into balls with chopped ham mixed in them. I defy anyone to eat the "misfits relish" and not vomit. I've owned bad cookbooks before but usually there are at least a few ideas hidden in them. I didn't find a single one here. For the serious cook, the use of bouillon cubes, commercial jellies and crushed candies for flavoring is just one mmore reason to stay as far away as possible from this dreadful work.

Excellent information; distilled; passionate; relevant then and now

This is one of many books by Edmond Szekely, a scientist who studied the healing techniques of the Essenes (that would be the tribe that Jesus was part of) in ancient books which Szekely was allowed to read in the Vatican. He then went on to test the ideas on tens of thousands of patients who visited his retreat in Baja California in the first half of the 1900s. He was advocating eating sprouts, getting sunshine daily and regular exercise almost 100 years ago, and the ideas are only more relevant in today's world. All of his books are worth reading, and the prices are kept low due quite intentionally by the dedication of the publishers at the International Biogenic Society (who are not online but do reply to snail mail).
If you are looking for no-nonsense advice on healthy eating and habits, and have some interest in the science behind the advice, Szekely's books will be worth your time and money.

About the Author
Diana C. Mutz is Samuel A. Stouffer Professor of Political Science and Communication at the University of Pennsylvania. She also serves as Director of the Institute for the Study of Citizens and Politics at the Annenberg Public Policy Center. Mutz received her PhD from Stanford University in 1988. She has published articles involving public opinion, political psychology and political communication in a variety of academic journals including the American Political Science Review, the American Journal of Political Science, Public Opinion Quarterly, Journal of Politics, and Journal of Communication. She is also the author of Impersonal Influence: How Perceptions of Mass Collectives Affect Political Attitudes (1998), a book awarded the 1999 Robert Lane Prize for the Best Book in Political Psychology by the American Political Science Association, and the 2004 Doris Graber Prize for Most Influential Book on Political Communication published in the last ten years.

Why we're in this mess

Mutz explains very clearly how and why political conversation in this country is stilted, unsatisfying and so often leads to more misunderstanding. She explains that the goody-two-shoes vision of democracy -- where we would all understand one another if we just had all the facts and listened -- is a fantasy. It's an excellent combination of social psychology and political science. After reading this you'll understand politics (and American society) in a much deeper way.

But when you look more closely at the kinds of interactions she is talking about, it becomes clear that she is dealing with informal settings where different kinds of people share their views on controversial issues. In these situations, the basic elements of successful deliberation - sharing personal experiences, using a guide that lays out different views, assembling a critical mass of people, etc. - are not part of the equation. Mutz's argument is interesting, but it applies more to casual conversations than to deliberation as it is being practiced today.

LOVED IT

1.- I am a Leonard Cohen fan.

2.- Anthony Reynolds is a character by itself, a man to take into account, to pay attention to. He also is a LC fan, and anything Reynolds had to say about Cohen sounded interesting to me as a starting point.

Those are two facts you should know in advance. I am reading this biography on LC and I am amazed. I am reading it slowly because I enjoy it so much I don't want it to end.

Besides there is a BIG story told there, the book is beautifuly written. Thanks Reynolds for the beauty.

When I read the first part, where AR tell about the gig in Valencia I felt sad (for LC health and the interruption of the concert for AR), amazed (because of that MAN going up to the stage knowing he was not healthy and giving it all) and happy....(because of that I did not feel alone). The fact that he has never seen LC live again only adds poetic beauty to the story. And we should be thankful for that too.

In 2010 I took a flight with my whole family from BA to Miami just in order to meet Leonard Cohen. I saw him live up there and was one of the most touching artistic experiences I've ever lived.

AR's description of the scene saying the he was the only one there and the rest of us (including muscicians) were expectators was EXACTLY what I felt that nigth.

I had the certainty that I was watching something extraordinaire, a complex and talented and good man making art at the spot, giving everything. Just the fact that AR had the sensibility to catch that magic in a short gig is proof enough that he has a connection with LC, an understanding of what he does that goes way beyond the necessity of watching LC performing more times.

Well, I would just love to thank AR for doing the enormous job of telling the story of this great man in such a beautiful manner.

A nugget underneath it all.

I had only heard the name of Leonard Cohen- knew nothing else. Our PBS station had this DVD on the air about a month ago. Well what a shock. Not only are the poem/songs so inspiring and intimate, the singer (not your average) is unbelievably deep. He truly has a velvet voice. Perhaps it is my age that I can be very selective of the artists, but the musicians on this DVD are super great! I highly recommend this IF you like the sentimental, reflective and honest performer. I happen to. Put some history in your musical library.ALso see Leonard Cohen: A Remarkable Life

A DOUBLE ESPRESSO OF PIPING HOT EROTICA

I have a reading window shaped like an hour. Tis far too miserable to go outside. Spring, what spring? So I am hunkered down in a large empty refectory in a Canary Wharf corporate. It's modern in a pleasing way, with a view over a windswept London dock and of hundreds of people tooing and froing from the tube station.

So far, so good. You know how it is, finding time to ourselves, eye time. So many things get in the way of a good read.

My kindle tells me I am 93 percent into Lucy Pireel's BOUND. Excellent. And the read is excellent, too. A swift sip of moccha, decaf. Don't want to get toooo excited now, do we? Especially with a double shot of hot hot erotica to roll our socks up and down.

And then who should rock up, or rather sloth down, but the collegue from limbo land: Ivor Dull-But-Worthy (name changed to spare blushes).

I try to pretend i am not there but or that he is not there. But I am there and he is there. I try feigning narcolepsy but he is still there, still talking when I open a sly eye.

'Look,' says I, 'I don't mean to be rude but .." I pull my phone out, smiling. 'Mother's birthday .. Excuse me.' The ruse works. He leaves and I get Kindling.

The problem with reading a book we are very much into is that we read too fast. It is the same effect as when time speeds up when we are having a good time.

I started reading BOUND over my porridge. I only stopped because I had to shave and shower and get out of the house to go to work. I continued reading the moment I got on my train into London. I read more when I was on the tube from London Bridge to Canary Wharf. And I finished the read as soon as I got a moment to myself in the refectory.

Had I been able to I would have read BOUND in one nibble of a wonton nipple.

This tells me that the story engaged me and carried me with it. The language never got in the way. I did not pause to fret about this or that. The story simply bossed my eyes.

I won't give the plot away, as this is a lean novella. What I will say is that it progresses with urgency and mounting intensity.

If you don't like erotica perhaps BOUND is not for you. No problemo. If you do like erotica, you will love BOUND - a double-espresso of literary arousal. I loved it.

Amelia is a girl who sub who knows what she wants and how to get it. Her descriptions of her pleasure are mind-blowing. "Sex is the drug," they lyric goes. Amelia's sexual highs are acutely captured. There is a joy about all this.

But it is more complex than that. This is not plain vanilla sex. There are issues of sub and dom involved, with capital P-Pain playing a key role, with 'the pleasurable sting taking Amelia over the abyss into orgasm' more than once.

And if knots are your thing, you will relish the references to 'Challengers, Prisoner's Cuffs and Hightwaymen'. Personally, I will learn something from this Knot School novella.

The story is straightforward but the characters are not. Insights are to be had into how we are, or some of us are, those who have opportunity and inclination. Perhaps the characters are more alive than we are. Perhaps they do things we may only dream about. Or maybe I am leading a very sheltered life and need to wake up and smell the leather.

Did the story turn me on. Yes. It also made me laugh more than once, especially one dab where the rock star stud approves an improvment to his cellar because the ceiling is now high enough to accommodate the flight of a decent sized bull whip. Cracking stuff!

So I could not put the read down. Would I read more from Lucy Pireel? Yes, definitely. So there you have it. I couldn't stop reading and would read more.

Couldn't put it down!

From the start of this story, you could tell that Raphael was a Dominate. But I was unsure of if Amelia was a Submissive or not. As the story first progressed, you could see the sparks between Amelia and Raphael.

One thing that I did really enjoy about this book was the fact that Raphael and Amelia didn't just jump into bed together. You could watch their relationship start out as co-workers and then slowly progress to more. Another thing that I really enjoyed about this book is that for a brief time, you were able to see a Domme play with her sub. That is not something that you see a lot of in BDSM type writing.

Overall I would recommend this book to my friends!

It's an Algebra book....at a great price.

It was required for my daughter's class, so I won't review the technical aspects of the book. However, I will say, it was over $140 cheaper than the bookstore was charging for it! Thanks Amazon - a used textbook - especially when it's not one you'll likely keep for a lifetime - is a great deal!

This book is ok. Algebra is not my favorite subject though. There's plenty of practice problems and reviews for the test. Overall I don't think you could find a better algebra book. This book and my teacher are keeping me passing so I am happy with what this book has to offer.

About the Author
Ruth Rendell (1930–2015) won three Edgar Awards, the highest accolade from Mystery Writers of America, as well as four Gold Daggers and a Diamond Dagger for outstanding contribution to the genre from England’s prestigious Crime Writers’ Association. Her remarkable career spanned a half century, with more than sixty books published. A member of the House of Lords, she was one of the great literary figures of our time.

The Girl Next Door

The reader knows who has committed the murder from the start of this well written crime novel so it isn't a traditional 'who done it' and there is very little input from the police investigating the crime at a later date. The book primarily concerns a group of friends who were children at the time of the murder - near the end of World War II - and how the discovery of two severed hands in a biscuit tin sixty years later affects them.

It is fairly obvious who one of the hands belongs to but the reader must wait until almost the end of the book to find out who is the other victim. I thought the characters were well developed and the author paints a vivid picture of their lives as adults. I thought it was interesting how the dynamics between the group changed and developed as the discovery of the hands leads to them talking about what happened that Summer when the murders probably took place.

If you're looking for a conventional crime novel then this may not be for you but if you're looking for an excellent novel about how people change - and don't change - during their lifetime then this may be of interest to you. Whether or not you enjoy crime novels this is worth reading for its development of character and the way small events can have huge repercussions at the time as well as many years later. I received a free copy of this book for review purposes from NetGalley.

The Girl Next Door

This novel, more literary than traditional crime fiction, veers between the present and the past. During the Second World War a group of children in Loughton, Essex, played together in some underground tunnels they found and renamed ‘the qanats.’ Nobody really remembers why, but time has passed and the group of children have grown up, grown old and, mostly, dispersed. However, the discovery of a pair of severed hands, buried in a biscuit tin so long ago, now brings many of those who played there so long ago back together again. Daphne Jones, three times married and still glamorous, Michael Winwood, whose father chased them from the tunnels and Lewis Newman, both now widowed, childhood sweethearts Alan Norris and Rosemary Wharton and the Batchelors – of whom George, Stanley and Norman are still alive.

The police are asked to investigate the crime – of which the reader is already aware of both victims and murderer . However, this book is more about the impact of the discovery and of unearthing old memories on those involved. In many ways this is a poignant and touching read – of both how age limits and frees us. It reunites old lovers, wreaks huge changes and forces people to confront their loss and childhood traumas. Ruth Rendell manages to make all the characters sympathetic, so you really care about what happens to them. Despite the length of time between the crime and the investigation, making even the police involved cynical about finding a conclusion, there is little doubt that confronting what happened at that time will help solve unanswered questions, make some characters doubt the way they are living their lives and, in some cases, make enormous changes. I really enjoyed this novel, even though it was not a traditional ‘whodunnit’ and it made me question why I have not read more of Ruth Rendell’s novels. Luckily, that is something I can, and do, intend to rectify. Lastly, I received a copy of this book from the publishers, via NetGalley, for review.

Childhood playmates reunite after 70 years to solve murder

This is closer to a novel of manners than a murder mystery, as a group of childhood friends are reunited in their 70s when a box containing two skeleton hands is found in their old play area. An early scene in the book reminded me of The Famous Five, with the older people sitting around being interviewed by a policeman about what they had noticed while playing all those years ago.
While the reader already knows the identity of the victims and the murderer, the friends have no idea... they are each more preoccupied by the impact of their reunion. Alan Norris starts daydreaming about his first love, Daphne, who is dazzling and glamorous in contrast to his dull and predictable wife Rosemary; Michael is steeling himself to meet his 99-year old father, who abandoned him as a child. The other couples are facing the inevitable health decline of old age, but one of the beautiful aspects of this book is that all the characters are still learning and growing and participating actively in life. None of them are defined by their age, even though their adult children and grandchildren are quick to dismiss any unpredictable behaviour as "Alzheimers".
The strongest and most engaging thread in the story is the "love triangle" between Rosemary, Alan and Daphne. This story makes a few surprising twists and turns, ending with a satisfying and believable conclusion. While I always enjoy Rendell's books, The Girl Next Door has a fresh and original style, and the intriguing, deceptively simple plot is handled with skill.
