Jutland, the largest naval battle of the First World War, was the most controversial engagement in the Royal Navy’s history. Falling well short of the total victory expected by the public, it rapidly sparked argument and ill-will within the Royal Navy, including disagreements among those in its highest echelons, many of whom had been directly involved in the battle. The first attempt to produce even an objective record was delayed and heavily censored, but this was followed by a more ambitious scheme to write a no-holds-barred critique of the fleet’s performance for use in training future officers at the Naval Staff College. This became the now infamous Naval Staff Appreciation, which was eventually deemed too damaging, its publication canceled and all proof copies ordered destroyed. Mentioned in virtually every book on Jutland since, but unavailable to their authors, the document has developed an almost legendary status of a book too explosive to publish. However, despite the order to destroy, a few copies survived. Transcribed from one of the copies, Jutland reveals this long-hidden work for the first time. It contains expert modern commentary and explanatory notes to put it in proper context. Now everyone interested in Jutland can read this book and judge for themselves.

a long awaited initial report
By Fernando Wilson L.
a most expected book, It must be reminded that this is archival material for the serious researcher and not just another Jutland history, but rather the first official British account without the full data in their hands. never published before, it fills many gaps in the explanation of the initial british perceptions of the battle

You must be a student of the battle
By jack greene
This is an extremely well edited book on what the Royal Navy produced in a very limited number immediately after World War One on the Battle of Jutland. Essentially it was produced as a hard-hitting critique of Admiral Jellicoe – in some cases not bringing up facts - and because of postwar “politics” it was suppressed. The hundred odd copies were burned though at least four survived and hence this volume.
If you know NOTHING on Jutland the battle, do not get this book. It demands knowledge of the period and what and how it occurred in May of 1916 from the British point of view. The late William Schleihauf started a long term and in depth study/editorial process and Stephen McLaughlin completed it – Stephen must be complimented for finishing the task. It is filled with excellent, albeit small, diagrams (numbering 53), explaining the unfolding battle and how the British reacted to it.
Poor H. H. Frost and his BATTLE OF JUTLAND is once again absent from the bibliography.
If you are a student of the battle, you must get a copy of it, and not unusually its discussion of the German point of view is limited to essentially translated works. Yes, it is biased in its approach, but a valuable addition to a person’s library on the battle nonetheless.
Disclaimer: I have a wargame coming out on JUTLAND at the end of the year that I have been researching for 4+ years.

Notes for this book forgets to say one of the ...
By rubaxter
Notes for this book forgets to say one of the important reasons it was suppressed - it was a Beatty fanboi presentation which takes the partisan side against Jellicoe.
Can't imagine WHY the web site blurb forgot to mention this, as the modern editor is very honest and up-front in the Intro and other places... except, that people who know about the petty nature of this controversy would probably have opted to purchase another, less biased volume they don't already own, instead.
This may be of interest to a person really, really involved in the people involved, but it shed no new light on the facts. I probably would have bought it, eventually, but not right now.
