An Adventure on an Island

If you are looking for a novella in Afrikaans this is a good choice. I was trying to get reacquainted with Afrikaans as I spent twelve years in South Africa as a child. I was amazed at how much of this story I could understand. What I actually did is I read a chapter out of the English version and a chapter out of the Afrikaans version and therefore I learned a lot of new words.

This book is the first of a trilogy about an island where people have separated themselves from one another with a white wall. Of course eventually people start climbing over the wall and things get interesting. I felt this had a lot of suspense in it. The plot is original and you don't know what is going to happen next. The main character is a teenage girl who steals the community's holy book to see what is really written in it. This of course causes chaos amongst the group.

This is the first dystopian type book I've ever read. It is set in the future after the world has been at war and most of the population has been annihilated. So really the origins of the people on the island remains a mystery until the end of the book. This book stands alone well. I haven't read other books in the series yet.

So now that I realized I could read in Afrikaans quite well I'll read other books in this language.

Ek moet bely dat ek eers die begrip distopie moes nalees om die boek binne konteks te verstaan. Hoewel dit 'n jeugroman is, het ek die verhaal so op my oudag geniet. Die boek het lekker gelees en 'n mens kan 'n les of twee daaruit haal. Dit is egter nie die diepste werk wat ek al gelees het nie. Net lekker ontspannend.

Simple with Great Work Sheets

This is really a great book. If you are starting a company and have no clue how to hire your first employee, I would really recommend this book. It is more of a workbook format, which is great because filling in the forms really gives you a good idea of where you stand and who you need to hire. The sections are concise, but contain a lot of helpful little bits that you should know.

I actually got my copy for free via a Quickbooks promotion, but I will definitely be buying other books by Rhonda if they are as helpful as this one.

A great text for intro level ethics courses

I use this book (in conjunction with _The Right Thing to Do_, edited by Rachels) as a text for an intro-level ethics course that I teach. I can't recommend it highly enough. Rachels is a sharp philosopher, as well as an interesting and lucid writer. In this book he covers all the basics (Divine Command Theory, Cultural Relativism, Subjectivism, Utilitarianism, Kant...), and does a fine job of drawing examples from applied ethics (gay rights, euthanasia, animal rights...) to illustrate the theories he discusses. This is not to suggest that you will find no fault with any of Rachels' arguments. If you are teaching ethics at the college level and are looking for an introductory level text, suitable for students with no previous exposure to philosophy, this is the one -- I know of none better.

Great Book, Mediocre Sellers

Rachels and Rachels' text is clear, concise and engaging. It is a wonderful introduction to ethics. I am well versed in philosophy, having majored in it, and I know quite a bit about ethics, but I thought that it would be fun to compare introductory texts.

By far, this is one of the better introductory ethics texts; although I think that it could have been a lot better if about 100-150 pages longer. It could have covered my ground.

I find this book engaging because of the examples given in the book. Powerful stuff.

I find the book, or the writing, near flawless. I do dislike, however, that the Atlantic Book Company, the sellers, advertised the book's condition as being 'like new'. That is quite untrue. I would say it is in good condition, seeing as how the bottom of all the pages are kind of screwed up. The only reason I tolerate this is due to the text not being compromised.

Great book. Needed it for my Ethics class. I'm using it to study for my midterm and it has been a huge help. It's a little out of date, but the material hasn't changed in years. So you can save yourself some money and get and interesting read, as well as a source of good information.

About the Author

Lisa M. Meeks, Ph.D.

Dr. Lisa Meeks is currently on staff with the University of California, San Francisco. She provides disability services to the schools of Medicine, Dentistry and the Graduate Division, while overseeing all of UCSF’s student disability programs as the program’s director. She also consults with private industry, other educational institutions, and government agencies.

Through her service to the University via the Chancellor’s Committee on Disabilities, and as the co-founder of the Coalition for Disability Access in Health Science and Medical Education, Dr. Meeks has helped shaped the future of health science education for students with disabilities. Her expertise is recognized by some of the leading educational, governmental, and private institutions in the United States.

Her most important contribution, however, is being a mother. She is the proud mother of two dynamic and amazing adult children and one very large dog. She splits her time between San Francisco, CA and the East Coast.

Neera R. Jain, M.S., C.R.C.

Neera Jain is a Rehabilitation Counselor by training and a passionate advocate for equal access in higher education, with a specialization in working with graduate and professional students in the health sciences.

She was the first dedicated staff member to serve students with disabilities at two major health sciences institutions in the United States - the Columbia University Medical Center campus in New York City, and the University of California, San Francisco. Formerly the Director of Student Disability Services at the University of California, San Francisco, she now consults for UCSF remotely from Auckland, New Zealand.

In New Zealand, she currently runs Auckland Disability Law, a specialist service that is part of the Community Law Centre movement. ADL is New Zealand’s only law practice dedicated to serving the unmet legal needs of disabled Kiwis.

She received her master’s degree from Boston University.

This book is a bible to assisting students with disabilities in the health profession. All offices need to hold some responsibility for accommodating students although disability services begin the process; it takes a team to finish the request. Everyone on campus should be trained on disability etiquette. Disability issues have become a cornerstone of higher education, and University faculty members play an essential role in ensuring that students with disabilities receive a quality post-secondary education. Many factors influence the willingness of faculty to provide quality services. This book illustrates how we has a team can accomplish so much. I look forward to the second edition.

I serve students with disabilities at ATSU, which operates graduate health sciences programs including the Doctor of Osteopathy (DO). This is the first guide I've read prepared specifically for the graduate level, including the DO, as well as the more widely-read MD and RN programs and many others. The guide addresses specific and often complex issues, such as accommodations in clinical settings. The complexity of some disabilities, for example with sensorineurial deficits and their support in the classroom are addressed with brief, no-nonsense text. The editors, Lisa Meeks and Neera Jain, found that perfect balance between the rights of students and the standards of univesities. Immensely helpful. Hat's off to a profoundly practical guide and their editors.

Ulla-Lena Lundberg (b 1947) is an acclaimed and prizewinning Finland-Swedish poet, ethnologist and author. She has published more than twenty works of fiction and essays. Born in Kokar in the Aland islands, she has lived in Japan, Africa and Siberia, and now lives in Porvoo, Finland. Ulla-Lena was featured on a recent Aland Islands stamp.

Evocative and descriptive a treat

Slow moving first half that captures the pace of life on a remote Finnish island. Beautifully descriptive and evocative of a land of seasonal contrasts and a small town population that do not like change. It finishes with a twist int the tale a gripping incident on the ice around which all life is centered in the winter. I really savored and enjoyed this read.
