A great introduction to the technology

I follow Forbes on Twitter and they often tweet links to Bitcoin stories. I usually ignore these stories, but one day I clicked on one and I immediately became fascinated with Bitcoin. A Google search revealed a ton of articles. The problem is that the articles on the internet are all over the place in terms of quality, accuracy, and technical depth--especially if you just want an introduction to Bitcoin and a realistic account of what you can do with this digital currency.

This book solves that problem. It provides the best non-technical introduction to Bitcoin that I've read. And more importantly it provides an authentic account of what it's like to try to live off of Bitcoin for a week.

The author starts off describing what Bitcoin is: a new form of currency that is digital instead of physical, & that you can transfer electronically & instantaneously to other people just like encrypted e-mail. She then goes into great detail about what it's like to try to buy things with Bitcoin--because despite the hype surrounding it, there just aren't very many merchants that accept it. Those stories were awesome. You really feel sorry for the author and share her anxiety as the value of Bitcoin fluctuates. Thankfully, the Bitcoin community is extremely helpful towards the author in terms of their time and sharing their knowledge.

Anyway, I would have given this five stars, but I felt it needed at least one picture sequence showing a transaction (holding up her iPhone to the merchant's QR code, entering the amount to transfer, showing the remaining balance).

If you want an excellent big picture, realistic account of Bitcoin, this is *the* book to get. Highly recommended.

Suspenseful, humerous, informative, up to the minute

The tale of living on a virtual currency not broadly accepted, even in techie San Francisco, is heart pounding in its way. One feels for the author as she struggles to provide herself with food, shelter, transportation...and coffee. The bits of biography and technical data with which she parallels her adventure story detail the fascinating development of Bitcoin itself. The grand finale is a Bitcoin community triumph I recommend it to anyone who lives in 21st Century.

Fantastic real world explanation

This book is all about bitcoin in today's world. A very practical view of what bitcoin is now, and what it MIGHT be in the future.

Bitcoin could go a lot of places. In any case, you should read this book. You'll learn more from this story than reading hundreds of speculative articles online.

Just pony up the dough and buy this book already. Just a shame you can't buy it in Bitcoins...yet

In addition to this title, she has co-authored the Marquee Series 2013, 2010, 2007, and 2003, Signature Series 2013, 2010, 2007, and 2003, Using Computers in the Medical Office: Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2010, 2007 and 2003, and Computer and Internet Essentials: Preparing for IC3. She has also authored textbooks on keyboarding, WordPerfect, desktop publishing, and voice recognition for Paradigm Publishing. Denise Seguin has been teaching at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario since 1986. She has taught a variety of software applications to adult learners in Continuing Education courses and learners in postsecondary Information Technology diploma programs. In addition to this textbook, Ms. Seguin has authored and co-authored many computer application textbooks for Paradigm Publishing, Inc. Audrey Roggenkamp has been teaching courses in the Business Information Technology department at Pierce College in Puyallup, including keyboarding, skill building, and Microsoft Office programs. If you need a reason to buy this book, here it is: IT SOLVES OFF THE PAGE VANISHING POINT PROBLEMS!

If you can only own 5 books on art, this would easily be one of them. I bought Scott Roberts how to draw book (a really essential book for the intermediate perspective artist btw), and I have found that perspective made easy fills in the missing information not found on that book. I have the classic book everyone uses basic perspective drawing a visual guide by John Montague, and yet Robbie Lee's book also covers much information that is missing from johns book mainly 3 point perspective. Let me explain why for the serious art student such a simple book is soo essential. It covers not only 1 point, 2 point and 3 point perspective in an easy to understand methods, but also HOW TO use perspective 1 point or 2 point for drawing landscapes and landscape features, which Scott Robertson shows but does not explain. MOST IMPORTANTLY this book provides geometric solutions for drawing with OFF THE PAGE VANISHING POINTS in both 2 point AND 3 point. The 3 point off the page VANISHING point solution and explanation is something that not even the two books Perspective for comic book artists by David Chelsea explain clearly, and yet those two books are unequaled in their explanation of 4 point, 5 point, and 6 point perspective drawing yet can't explain off the page VP solutions like Robbie Lee's book does. If you get this book it will help you understand how to work with use and setup perspective grids. I couldn't understand Scott Robertson's how to draw book chapters on perspective grids without this book. I know Robbie Lee's book may at first glance seem simplistic, maybe eve short and brief, but this book has some seriously important info that is packed in tightly that other more popular or thicker books on art or architectural perspective lack. I have over 30 books on perspective, this book is easily in my top 5 books on the subject because of its easy to understand fundamentals that are not covered in any other books on the subject. If anything I would like to ask Robbie Lee personally to make a second book, a sequel covering 4point and beyond, shadows and shading as well as other difficult perspective and geometry problems in a simple to understand and memorize way like he has with this book.

This book is ON POINT!

I teach elementary art, and year after year, perspective drawing is always one of those lessons I can always count on my students loving. I bought this book for my classroom library, as a resource for the kids who wanted to learn a little bit more after our introductory one point perspective lesson. Man am I glad I did- It goes MUCH MORE in depth than I imagined it would (even teaching me some things when I thought I was a seasoned veteran!), but the author put it together in a fun, interactive way that is very approachable and that my students are completely drawn toward. I haven't even done our lesson yet and I already have kids eyeballing it on my book shelf. I ended up ordering a few extra copies for my classroom and our school's media center! It's that cool.

The first part is great and easy to follow. As I got further into the book the chapters try to cover too much and I got bogged down. Still a good resource and better than anything else I have found.

It explains how data on the world are converted into digital form and the analytical capabilities used to bring understanding to a range of areas of interest and issues.

Spatial data are usually based on two, dichotomous paradigms: exactly defined entities in space, such as land parcels and urban structures, or the continuous variation of single attributes, such as temperature or rainfall. The adoption of one or the other influences how the geographical data are structured in the GIS and the types of analysis possible. A further area of focus in the book concerns the problems of data quality and how statistical errors in spatial data can affect the results of spatial modelling based on the two paradigms of space. Fuzzy logic and continuous classification methods are presented as methods for linking the two spatial paradigms. The book concludes with an overview of current developments and trends in providing spatial data to an ever-expanding global community of users.

Excellent text for introductory UK/EU/global instruction

This is a European (UK) view of GIS and its applications, which I found cited in a bibliographic reference. Its emphasis is on general principles and methods, and it's a useful text for those whose experience begins with European geographic features and datasets, and mathematical training. The introductory treatments of statistics and mathematical modeling of spatial phenomena -- missing from most US texts on GIS -- are excellent. However, introductory courses for Americans normally present these topics through software and tutorials for ESRI's ArcGIS, in which mathematical foundations are limited to general descriptions of software functions. An instructor's presentation of these methods should not be framed by this product marketing, but unfortunately that's a reality for students and instructors in the US, even when international experiences of students and faculty reach beyond US industry and commerce. I recommend this text for US instructors and advanced students, with some mathematical and international experience, but not as a general introduction to principles of GIS.

I'm a big fan.

I bought this book to accompany Van Edwards Udemy courses. I have since become a huge fan of her insight and it has even helped me on my job. The actual book has the look and feel of a self published book but the information inside is first rate, never heavy and actually quite entertaining. The author has a public website with ever increasing and relevant topics as well. If you are interested in this subject buy the book and head over to Udemy on the web to check out her two courses. I have read a couple other books on the subject and they were heavy technical boring works. Not so with this book. Very readable and can easily be used as a reference. You'll watch people a lot differently after reading this book.

Very bite size in information. I know that is the style, but if you want a really meaty book on the subject, go for Paul Eckman's book. If you are busy and want something simple and to the point, this is a good choice.

Keeping staff honest

This book is interesting. I had looked to buy it before but had no time to read then and figured by the time the book was ordered, mailed and I got it, I'd have lost interest. The book came quickly and I am reading it (at work) while the boss is on vacation. Oh, I'm still at my desk answering phones and helping staff, but I now know when someone says they are sick and want to go home, if they are actually just taking the day off for fun purposes.

Good information, but not particularly well written

I totally agree with the reviewer that said the sections tend to run together and aren't laid out real well. The information seems to come at you haphazardly. It reminds me of getting information second-hand from an aunt. One is always left wondering if she's remembering to explain it all.
I understood the Hay Diet before I read this book, and I think that may be a good thing. While the basic diet is shown in a single chart on page 12, it is so basic that I wonder if readers will understand. The really helpful chart is on page 98, which again breaks down the basic diet.
Chapters 2,3 and 4 are about using the diet to treat various ailments. While that may be true, I felt that the diet wasn't yet satisfactorily explained. Those chapters, it seems to me, should have been at the end of the book.
On the other hand, the book is chock-full of really practial advice for implementing the diet as a lifestyle. There are many menus, with an emphasis on creating your own menu ideas.
I suspect that I will refer to the book again and again as I search for more food ideas.

Jackie Habgood's book The Hay Diet Made Easy is just that--an easy to read and understand book on the theory and practice of William H. Hay's food combining diet. While there are other books available, this is perhaps the best for someone new to method, as well as those who suffer from various ailments to which our esteemed medical establishment often turns a blind eye. The only drawback to Ms. Habgood's work is the actual layout of the sections: these tend to run together without a definite sense of division. However, whether for reference (her charts are great) or inspiration or learning, this book is truly the only book one would need to purchase.

I LOVE this book!

I initially got Kathryn Marsden's little book on Food Combining which is a great beginner (explainer). This one goes into much more detail but still keeps everything so simple. Once you learn the premise, you can honestly create or adjust every recipe you already have and use. This book also gave information about medical conditions that respond favorably when we stop mixing all foods together at the same time. This information could help keep you out of the doctors office. My friend with diabetes is thriving on this program. You could honestly have more time, money and health to do what you really enjoy!

The book is a must read for any company executive facing a corporate crisis-or is smart enough to realize that pretty much every company faces a reputation crisis at some point.

The book is an easy read and, as the title suggests, the repair process is divided up into 12 different steps. My favorites being "Step 1: Take the Heat-Leader First" and "Step 8: Seize the Shift." The latter explaining how corporate crises can often be linked back to shifts in business climate that leaders failed to see or ignored.

Drawing on her work with Weber Shandwick, and citing numerous case studies (IBM, BP, Xerox, Tyco, and Boeing), Gaines Ross does an excellent job with Corporate Reputation.

In summary; no CEO should be handed the reigns of a company, until they've read all 160 pages of this brilliant book.

But even a cursory look at the marvelous photos, drawings, and paintings assembled for a National Portrait Gallery exhibition honoring Ernest Hemingway's centennial reminds readers that the author's enduring fame has at least as much to do with his riveting good looks, virile charisma, and macho lifestyle. This book of photos is buoyed by intelligent essays by curator Frederick Voss and Hemingway biographer Michael Reynolds that serve as cogent minibiographies of the man. They cover all the salient points: the great fiction, from The Sun Also Rises to The Old Man and the Sea; the four wives, subservient Hadley Richardson and Mary Welsh and Martha Gelhorn, the feminist exception; the energetic outdoor and public life that couldn't stave off bouts of depression that prompted his suicide in 1961. All the famous pictures are here: the 1934 shot of a cocky, mustachioed Hemingway kneeling with the horns of his kill from an African safari. The classic 1957 Karsh portrait of the writer as bearded éminence grise in a turtleneck sweater. But he isn't visible in the most haunting of all--a photo of his funeral, with a small group of mourners huddled against desolate hills and a pitch-black Idaho sky--an image whose existential starkness equals that of Hemingway's masterpieces. --Wendy Smith

Portrait of the Artist in Pictures

After recently rereading A FAREWELL TO ARMS, I became interestesd in Hemingway again and revisted this book of photographs that I had purchased after having seen the National Portrait Gallery exhibit coinciding with the hundred birthday of Hemingway in 1999. This book accomplishes what few photography books do: it includes practically as much written information about the writer-- from the informative essay by Michael Reynolds to the well-documented captions that accompany the pictures-- as photographs, thus creating a mini-biography of the writer as well.

The lives of few writers of the 20th century were followed as closely by both the media and the general public; certainly no author was photographed more. There are pictures here of Hemingway by Robert Capa (1937); the most famous portrait by Yousuf Karsh (1957) and the shot by John Bryson (1958/58) of Hemingway with a most obvious comb-over. Also included are paintings and sketches of the writer in addition to pictures of his literary friends-- Fitzgerald, Joyce, Dos Passos et al.-- as well as photographs of his four wives and his first love, a Red Cross nurse, the inspiration for the character Catherine in A FAREWELL TO ARMS. You also get to see the covers of Hemingway's major novels as well.

Hemingway wanted to be the best writer of his generation. Whether or not he accomplished his goal, he received the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 for his short novel THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA and the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. Considered tame by today's standards his novels were controversial during his time because of their profanity and sexual content. His editor at Scribner's insisted that he delete most of the profane language from his works, his own mother found his writing "filthy" and the Boston police seized the June 1929 issues of Scribner's magazine that contained the second installment of A FAREWELL TO ARMS from newsstands because of the "salacious" content.

PICTURING HEMINGWAY is a good introduction to a whole new generation interested in this writer as well as a nostalgic visit for already fans.

...limited selection of pictures

This book was produced as a companion to the National Portrait Gallery's Hemingway centennial celebration. It is a handsome quarto. The book is only 160 pages and much of that is text explaining the pictures. I expected more pictures and was disappointed with this book. Having read several Hemingway
biographies and nearly all of his books I was disappointed that this book didn't even include everything I'd seen elsewhere. The recent Hemingway on Hunting compilation, for examples, contains many great pictures that are not included here. To give the editor credit, the pictures included are reproduced very
nicely. There are also some pictures included of the first edition dustjackets of many of Hemingway's classics. Inexplicably some of these dustjackets are shelfworn creased examples; I'm sure it would not have been impossible to find perfect examples to photograph for this book if some effort had been made. This is a book that is worth spending 30 minutes browsing through in a library but I can't recommend paying [money] dollars for it.

This volume is being produced to accompany an exhibition at the National Gallery in Washington, DC, June 18-October 3. Beyond simply another collection of pictures, this is more a visual biography revealed through family snapshots, paintings, and formal portraits with explanatory captions. It also includes book covers as well as images of famous friends like James Joyce, Scott Fitzgerald, and John Dos Passos plus a top-shelf essay by leading biographer Michael Reynolds on Hemingway as an icon. The perfect visual companion to the Hemingway centennial celebration. Highly recommended.--Michael Rogers, "Library Journal"
