Sound, sensible advice on the practice of prayer

As one who recives spiritual direction, I am constantly on the lookout for books that make sense of a discipline that can all too easily be shrouded in a fog of verbiage. This is one of the very few books that fits the bill; it speaks to the reader directly, in simple, straightforward prose, and its content speaks directly to the spiritual needs of beginners in meditation like me. In particular, the chapters on "How to Meditate" and "Temperament and Mentl Prayer" were especially helpful. All in all, this is the best introductory manual on the practice of prayer that I have seen since Anthony Bloom's "Beginning to Pray."

Powerful Reading

This slender but powerful volume is divided into two fifty-page essays. The first discusses spiritual direction and is aimed mainly at the religious; the second covers the practice of meditation and speaks more to the lay reader.
Merton's commentary on direction is incisive as always. He has a nasty habit of confronting me with my human weaknesses just when I think I've made a little spiritual progress. My spirituality must not be compartmentalized, it must encompass my every thought and action: holiness is not simply a matter of going to church every Sunday, it's how I brush my teeth. Further, my spiritual life must not become enslaved to form; it is all about substance. If the essence of my being is committed to the Holy Spirit, if love for God infuses my every thought and action, I will discern my vocation and conduct my life in harmony with His will. Certainly, a lay person may need guidance in this discernment, but for a religious, whose vocation is spiritual "perfection", it is imperative. Without proper guidance, and a lot of it, proper formation is impossible and the result is often a lost soul. Merton explains what a spiritual director should be, and perhaps more important, what he should not be. Very few of us can discern God's will in solitude-most of us need to talk things out, even if, as Merton points out, it is only a matter of hearing confirmation of what we already know in our heart.
Merton's commentary on meditation includes everything from explaining the true goal of meditation (union with God) to teaching the basics (e.g., it's best to meditate when seated). His primer is must reading for anyone interested in meditation, or anyone wishing to improve his/her prayer life in general.

So many books teach the novice how to go about sitting, breathing, visualizing, etc. Merton cuts through the chase and offers a helpful guide to the Christian who really wants to grow through the cultivation of the inner life. But why shouldn't he? Merton's books were teaching generations truths about the contemplative life before the buzz words started to buzz. This short, easy to read book is a joy to recommend.

A great read and necessary one for anyone wanting to understand terror.

I also just finished Terrorism: a History by Randall Law. An excellent history and review of themes of terrorism. He breaks up each type of terrorism group and timeframe nicely. But you can clearly see how the predecessors influenced the newer groups. Understanding this also gives you a perspective to understand how we have blow it so badly and the extent to which we are repeating the mistakes of the past. All told in a nice series of stories of the various conflicts. For an academician, he is very readable.

O carte in care Iubirea invinge si Iubirea este din Dumnezeu, este chiar Dumnezeu!

Am citit cartea cu foamea si nesatul unui tanar (desi sunt la 64 ani). O carte care merita citita de toti tinerii romani, ca sa-i ajute sa inteleaga adevarul Scripturilor, si anume ca PACATUL ESTE O PLACERE DE O CLIPA, SI DOAR MAI PE URMA CULEGI CONSECINTELE FAPTUIRII LUI!
Cartea are un Happyend, dar viata nu totdeauna are un astfel de traseu. De aceea sa nu glumim cu pacatul pentru ca nu stim noi daca trimite Domnul o BALENA sa ne salveze de la consecintele fugi de Dumnezeu!
Va recomand din inima aceasta carte!

Ce e mai frumos e faptul ca arata ca, desi oamenii pot sa greseasca amarnic, Dumnezeu in marea lui indurare, are un plan perfect pentru fiecare dintre noi,daca ne intoarcem la El cu toata inima.

O poveste de dragoste care Dumnezeu o intoarce intr-o binecuvintare dar nu fara sa simti consecintele pacatului

M-am delectat citind aceasta carte si nu am putut so pun jos pina nu am terminat-o citind pina tirziu in noapte. O poveste de dragoste care incepe fara Dumnezeu dar care Dumnezeu bun, plin de dragoste si indurare o intoarce intr-o binecuvintare sau multe binecuvintari. O poveste care se impleteste in mari adevaruri si anume starea de pacat a pacatosului si intoarcerea lui la Dumnezeu; biserica lui CHristos care trebuie sa se trezeasca, sa se curateasca si sa spuna pacatului pe nume. E istoria a fiecaruia din noi, consecintele pacatului si intoarcerea la Dumnezeu. Dumnezeu sa binecuvinteze pe autor si pe cei ce vor citi aceasta carte.

I obtained this manual as preparation for a stint as a volunteer mental health specialist in Northern Uganda.
It is not only well written and researched thoroughly, but it presents a treatment protocol that can reach many more
clients than the traditional methods I know. Additionally, it must make changes in the brain that enable memories to
be coherent and linked to experience rather than intrusive and disruptive.

Years ago I developed - by the seat of my pants so-to-speak, a version of the same thinking/method while working with some foster children
who had difficult backgrounds and multiple placements.. How I wish i had had this method to guide my thinking at that time.. Then I
might have made more progress before these children were yanked away, once again, to another foster home.

About the Author

Linda E. Graham is Professor of Botany at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She teaches a field and laboratory course on algal biology and serves as a consultant to governmental agencies and industry on issues related to algae in the environment or as a source of useful products and processes. Her research lab focuses on algal phylogeny and evolutionary links between green algae and land plants, aspects of algal physiology and ecological associations in freshwaters, and biotechnological applications of algae. Dr. Graham earned a bachelor's degree from Washington University in St. Louis, a master's degree from the University of Texas, and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. As a Ph.D. student, she also trained in marine algae at the Friday Harbor Labs operated by the University of Washington. Dr. Graham is a Fellow of the AAAS.

 

Lee W. Wilcox received his Ph.D. in Botany from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His research interests include symbiosis, evolution, and cell biology of dinoflagellates, green algae, and plants. Dr. Wilcox designed the art programs for Algae and Plant Biology and has provided many original photographs for both texts. He has also contributed photographs and illustrations to a variety of scientific articles, book chapters, and textbooks.

Awesome Book!

I would have never believed that algae could be so interesting. All you need is a good book and an awesome professor(HPU) obsessed with algae(e.g. diatoms)! Ha ha! I'm absolutely hooked and loving it! My only thing that I don't like is that the pictures are not in color and I really feel that in this case color is very important for visualization. :)

Great Book for researcher

This book is great in its organization and coverage of every major algal group in a decent amount of detail. It offers enough details of processes and always keeps the bigger picture of algae's importance in the earth's processes in sight. I am using this book in a small class completely devoted to algae where every student studies a different algal group or process, and we unanimously agree that this is a great book for the field. The only thing we found disappointing was that phosphorus cycling is not included in the biogeochemistry chapter, which is an unfortunate oversight considering the importance that nutrient plays in today's lakes and eutrophication. The pictures would be better in color because a lot of algae identification requires color. It is understandable that printing companies are trying to be more "green" in printing books that will only be used for three years before the next edition arrives, but they also take the opportunity to produce lesser quality paper and graphics without reducing the book price. Amazon is definitely the better place to buy this book - it was $70 less than in the university bookstore! The business details aside, this is an excellent book and a must for any algae researcher.

A terrific reference ofor learning more about phytoplankton and seaweeds

This outstanding textbook on "algae" provides a solid reference for learning more about the diverse photosynthetic forms that occur in aquatic habitats. Graham and Wilcox summarize a diverse range of topics for the major Divisions, including taxonomy, cell structure, biology, reproduction, life history, and ecology. It has an excellent section on coccolithophorids, including the steps in coccolith formation. It also includes practical uses of algae and chapters devoted to phytoplankton and seaweed ecology. The lack of color photographs may be attributed to the inclusion of numerous images taken with electron microscopes (the only way to "see" most microalgae) and probably to the fact that this book is not intended to be a field guide. However, it makes a perfect complement for learning more about and understanding phytoplankton and seaweeds that you may identify under a microscope or in the field using any of the widely available field guides.
