I used to feel this way, too: stuck, frustrated and starting to get desperate.

When I joined the Department of Corrections as a Probation Officer, I felt like it was pretty close to being my Dream Job. I loved motivating offenders to change their behaviour, and it felt rewarding to reduce the harm they caused.

So I got excited and applied for promotions. Before I knew it, I was a Service Manager, in charge of a whole team of Probation Officers. I had such power, impact and influence!

Exciting… right?

Well, actually I was miserable. I had put so much faith in the Service Manager position. So when it didn’t end feeling like it was my Purpose, I felt lost. I proceeded to go through a painful period of serious burn-out because I simply had no idea what to do next.

Was I missing out on opportunities? Would I be stuck there forever? Did I even have transferable skills? It was the worst few months of my entire life.

I was terrified that my career would always feel like that, as if I was chasing a rainbow. I was scared that “work” really was something that everyone hated, that I had no choice or control.

The good news is, I found a way out.
Over many years I used trial and error techniques under the coaching of top psychologists, mentors, entrepreneurs, coaches and senior leaders/managers, to figure out how to turn my passions and talents into a career and lifestyle that EXCITED me!

A brilliant book, utilizing simple logic and common sense.

This book exposes the irrationality of relativism. It demonstrates in simple language the ease with which that philosophy's arguments can be demolished. I have purchased several copies and recommend it. I suspect that those unable to comprehend the logic of Mr. Copan's arguments have been tragically conditioned to the point of a closed mind.

Proves you can't have your (logical) cake and eat it too.

Copan's book, at its core, is simply a defense of the Law of Non-Contradiction. Consider the dilemma implied by the book's title. Is the statement "all truth is relative" a relative truth? If it's RELATIVELY true, then the statement itself cannot be trusted, since it may be untrue. If it's ABSOLUTELY true, then it contradicts itself, in that it simultaneously asserts and denies that there is at least one absolute truth. In other words, if it's true, it's false; and if it's false, it's false.
Or consider the relativistic religious statement, "all religons lead to God." This is a logical impossibility, since many of them assert that there is only one way to God. So either all exclusivistic religions are false, in which case they do NOT lead to God, or else one exclusivistic religion is true, in which case NO other religion leads to God. In either case, the premise is disproved.
I have a few questions for the reviewers who downrated this book: Mormons, JWs and Catholics, as well as evangelical Christians, all assert "truths" that contradict some of the "truths" of the others. So they can't all be right, can they? Copan's logical scalpel cuts deep; you can't reject his logic simply because you don't like its implications. HOW is it invalid?
Perhaps one of you could supply some examples of the "twisted logic" or "empty semantics" that demonstrate the "sheer lunacy of religion" or the book's lack of "heart". Rhetoric is empty unless backed up with specifics.
It all goes to show that you can't fool Mother Logic. A great book!

How science REALLY evolved, messy, non linear and very interesting. Brings those science gods down to earth.

My physics students often have the deluded idea that scientific truths are discovered in a very linear fashion by boring white guys who know exactly what they are doing, and set out to do it. Their general perception is that these weird haired scientists get some material, do some experiments and then "ta da" the answers are revealed and they go onto the next bit of physics.

The manner in which many physics textbooks treat the concepts in physics feeds into this misconception, everything is already decided, chopped into chapters with formulas helpfully placed in boxes (and if is really important, it is in bold type). Physics experiments are only done to get the "right" answer. The main goal is to learn where to plug in the information you have been given in order to get the answer at the end of the book. They beg to be assigned the odd problems so that they can check their answers.

This book makes science real. Dirty, convoluted, messy, imprecise and done by sometimes vain, often socially inept and occasionally cheating real human beings. They ask questions, they fumble about, they fight with each other, they argue and eventually some sort of truth begins to emerge.
Leonard does an excellent job at presenting how thinking was so very different in the past. Having been trained in the scientific method, it is hard to understand how people did not think to answer questions by experimenting, that this idea itself was revolutionary.

The Upright Thinkers starts with the rat like creature who was our common ancestor and ends with quantum mechanics. That is a lot of material to cover, and it is done well, with humor and at a level that even those with no science training, but simply a curious mind, can follow. Those of us in the field will see the equations swimming before our eyes as familiar names become real human beings, with all of their foibles.

Leonard himself comes across as the sort of person you would love to have over for dinner. He talks with great fondness of his father and his struggle to explain physics to his uneducated but obviously quite bright father. Perhaps those experiences are what make him into an approachable science writer today. He is funny (I laughed out loud that he uses Max Planck as a name for dinner reservations, as his is too hard to spell) and tells the story of the evolution of science and scientific thinking in a way that makes it seem so much more human.

I shall be making part of this book required reading for my honors physics students. They will be cheered by the fact that those names in their textbooks are not gods, nor infallible humans and that science is not a dry and dead topic but a constantly evolving and messy human endeavor.

Believe or not, the hard effort of these scientists and their quest to "dominate nature" has created positive ripple effects in our daily lives.

Just to mention one, the computer revolution rests on physics innovations.

The author also blends the historic/scientific aspects of the book with the history of his relationship with his father, a humble polish Jewish emigre who survived nazism.

Sweeping

An engaging and enjoyable book covering everything from the rise of civilization and the enlightenment to the standard model of physics. Non-technical and understandable to the lay reader. Enjoyable sketches and anecdotes about the leading historical figures in science. The connections in the narrative to the author's father, a holocaust survivor, are touching. I found few new scientific or philosophical insights in the book, but a worthwhile read, nonetheless.

Good investment

Well, it is only the Pakistan part of Hindukush. This is by far the best travel book about the region which I found to be the most challenging for trekkers of all the places I have visited. I used it on two journeys to the Karakorum. The book contains besides the obligatory historical and cultural insights the description of the most outstanding treks in condensed form. For me and I think for most trekkers, the most important informations are what the demand and the highlights of the tours are and how to get to it. If you have to turn right or left on a certain stage is not what you are going to read when you are already on the way. Much more important are good maps since there is also a deplorable lack of maps on this mountain area. This book has a good collection of drafts. But taken into consideration that the treks had been done by the authors it is sometimes a little disappointing that they missed to go more in detail. The number of days for a trek is very much depending on your physical fitness. I did all the treks in a shorter time than proposed, which should be known beforehand for better planning. Also that the authors did not dare to tell us more about their subjective impressions. If not here, where else? If you have not seen the Karakorum, you missed the most impressive mountain scenery Nevertheless it is the best what you can get about this remote and neglected mountain area.!

MUST BUY

This is the best buy and must buy guide book if you are traveling to this part of the world. That's all I can say. Have two copies cause you need one to be with you all the time when you are trekking in this area and the other one can be stowed some where safe. The reason I am saying it is because it is very hard to find one. And I am lucky that I got it.

This is a rare gem. The information in the book are still extremely valuable, even after 13 years from the initial publication. I hope Lonely Planet would publish an updated version of this book in near future.

In particular they question the value of open-plan offices that favour collaboration over concentration and contemplation. Given the growing pensions crisis and anticipated knowledge gap in the workforce in many developed countries, this book has real political, economic and social resonance. About the Author
Jeremy Myerson is the Helen Hamlyn Professor of Design at the Royal College of Art, where he also leads the Helen Hamlyn Centre. A journalist, academic and design activist, he was the Founding Editor of Design Week and he also established the InnovationRCA, the Royal College of Art's innovation network for business. He is the author of a number of books on workplace design, including New Workspace New Culture for Gower, and lectures and consults internationally. Jo-Anne Bichard is a Research Fellow in the RCA Helen Hamlyn Centre. She trained as a social anthropologist at Goldsmiths College and her MSc at Imperial College involved an ethnographic study of neuroscience laboratories. Her research focus is on barriers to and opportunities for inclusive design of products and environments, including the workplace. Alma Erlich is a chartered psychologist with 20 years experience of consulting to organisations, providing management development, evaluation, training and coaching to senior management. Alma is a consultant to the Royal College of Art Helen Hamlyn Centre, advising on research for design innovation and workplace environments. She is also a Member of the British Psychological Society, the Association of Business Psychologists and the Social Research Association.

Felt Like I Was There!

I’ve always liked Paul Lynde, and I always wondered what happened to him. This book was written not just from the point of view of a fan, but from the perspective of a friend. The Author, Cathy Rudolph, was let in to his world and treated with kindness and generosity. This really showed his good side, although we are also allowed to see his devilish, if good-humored, nature.

I also enjoyed hearing about all his famous friends, like those with whom he went to college or worked with on stage in the early years.

Each episode of Paul’s life is wonderfully written and detailed, making me (the reader) feel like I was there myself! I found myself rooting for him to get that great movie part, and feeling bad when things went wrong, and then happy each time he found success.

I didn’t want to hear from anyone how the story ends, I had to read it myself. I could not put the book down because I was dying to know what happened to him.

If you don’t get it, you’ll regret it! It was a very fun and informative read. I real page turner!

Paul Lynde: A Biography-His Life, His Love[s] and His Laughter! Could not put it down!!!

This book gravitated to me because I have always had the highest regard for Mr. Lynde. His humor could always catapult me out of my dark days and he just seemed like a very gentle and kind man.

Cathy Rudolph captures not only her dreams but Mr. Lynde's as well with incredible enthusiasm, honesty and of course class. Reading how her dream has come to pass is a tribute to all of us who have given up on ours because of our own disillusions.

Let me summarize without giving any spoilers to those who are intending on reading this terrific book! Before I go any further. I read it in 3 days because I could not put it down.

This biography begins with Cathy[the author] pursuing her dream and by accident happens across a certain phone number which she calls and this sets her dream to happen. She describes it in such vividness, you feel as though it is happening to you. She then establishes a true friendship with Mr. Lynde which is what he was lacking in his life. It was unconditional! She learned so many things about Mr. Lynde as well as finding herself.

The book covers every aspect of his life with truthfulness and tenderness. It covers his childhood, schooling, relationships and rise to stardom. Cathy does this with a beautiful personal touch and thusly, the compassion for Mr. Lynde's triumphs through his struggles is evident.

This book portrays the "real, fragile and lonely Mr. Lynde." But, don't let that deter you. This book is one of the best biographies I have read because it manages to make you laugh and cry with each page turn. Cathy captures Mr. Lynde's life with sincere honesty because her writing displayed what true friendship is all about. The one which occurred between Cathy and Mr. Lynde.

Do Not hesitate to purchase this biography. You will NOT be disappointed!!!!

Not too Great

I couldn't wait to start this book because I was a huge fan of Paul Lynde, who, in my opinion, was the funniest man in the world. His facial expressions, alone, could render me helpless with hysterical laughter. But even though he and I were the same age, and both lived (at different times) in Mt. Vernon, Ohio, I had never read or heard anything about his life or personality. Miss Rudolph's bookfills in the blanks quite well. She had a teenage crush on Lynde and one day she managed to reach him by phone. their subsequent cersation resulted in a friendship that lasted until his death. ......Paul Lynde was an unhappy man, whose large circle of friends and admirers could not assuage his loneliness, nor soften his violent temper. It's a shame that his great comedic gifts that gave pleasure to so many could not have cheered his own lonely life. ...... I gave this book only two stars primarily because it is so poorly edited. One or two spelling errors would not affect my grade, but this book is not good enough to compensate for the riot of misspellings and incorrectly used words. (At one point, Cleveland Amory is repeatedly called Amory Cleveland.!} that this book provides.
