Very average read
By Elizabeth
I am an avid reader of all types of novels but I love romance. I have read quite a few romance novels and this was basically very very average. Meet Caitlin Bennett poor little rich girl who has no one in her life. She is a mystery writer and keeps herself locked up in her penthouse apartment. She starts to receive hate mail and is pushed in front of a car. At this point she knows that someone is stalking her. Her friend asks his brother to come protect her, and enter Mac, the bodyguard. These two have never liked each other and now are forced to spend time together until the stalker and of course later we find out he is a killer is caught.

I don't expect much of a plot when I read a romance. In fact, I'm used to the plots being "corny" and "underdeveloped." But not only was this story line silly as a "mystery" but the romance was awful. The Caitlin character spent most of the time whining, but you were supposed to like her because she treated her chaffeaur like one of the family. She's extremely wealthy and thinks someone is stalking her, but never bothers to hire private security. Her publisher gets a bomb threat and doesn't hire private security. When she is finally assaulted, one person comes to her rescue. This story had the usual flaws I find in many poorly written stories (e.g. the killer enters her apartment very easily through the roof). This was so hard to swallow - how many of the rich and famous have their homes poorly equipped so just about any nutcase off the street could enter. How many rich people would stay terriorized and not hire anyone to protect them? (The answer is zero, only a poor person would stay terrorized for months). Also the heroine's actions are just plain dumb (e.g. going on tv) And finally the killer was so predictable you knew who he would be in the first few chapters. Because in every poorly written story I've read, that's who the killer usually is. Very average read.

Possible Ghost Writer?
By A Customer
I have read many books by Sharon Sala/Dinah McCall and this one was a major disappointment. The writing was terrible. The clues as to the killer were so obvious, you knew who he was in the first couple of chapters. In addition, the phrase :Oh, My God" and it's variations were used to express every emotion from suprise to disgust to dispair - over and over again. I had to force myself to finish reading it just to see if maybe I had been wrong about how the murderer was. Unfortunately, I wasn't. Sala has written so many good books but if I had read this one first, I would never have bought another one. I'm hoping she didn't really write it - that she used a ghost writer for this one.

Great suspense, but romance falls short...
By Tracy Talley
This was a very good story, but the romance got in the way. I am a diehard romance reader and thought that a romance/suspense would whet my appetite, but this story didn't do the job that well. The suspense was awesome and does keep you guessing till the end but the somewhat 'corny' romance got in the way of an excellent plot of a woman being terrorized by a crazed stalker...
~An unusually snowy December in Manhattan keeps most of the city's dwellers inside the comforts of their cozy apartments, but not the man who wants a bestselling mystery author dead. He prowls the streets, anxiously waiting or his moment to catch her alone. To show her how much he hates her. How much she has ruined hs life. Becoming frustrated with his waiting game, he begins to kill 'substitutes' of her until he can get his hands on her.
Caitlin Bennett, bestselling mystery author writes her next novel in ernest amid the chaos below while safely tucked away in her highrise luxury apartment. She is afraid for she has been recieving deranged letters from a crazed fan for almost 6 months, but the latest one bears a grim warning, she needs to tell the police before he finds her.
A horrible event forces her to hire an ex-cop, 'Mac' McKee, her best friend's brother and her personal antagonist for the past years as her personal bodyguard.
With his protection she begins to feel safe once again, but when two more victims are found brutally murdered, each bearing a unique resemblance to Caitlin, they realize that SHE is the ultimate target and the crazed killer is now coming to claim his final victim!
Can Mac save Caitlin from the man who despises her? Will he lose his heart to her in the process? A true thriller that will keep you guessing and the end is a shock...
I liked Caitlin, she was strong and witty, but Mac needs some work. He didn't hold my interest and his character wasn't developed well enough for me to believe his affection for her. The romance between the two was bland and kind of 'corny'. Too much 'mush' when there should've been resistence between them. I say this because throughout the beginning, we are led to believe that these two irritate one another and are attracted to each other at the same time. But what we get is 'mush' right off the bat with little to no dispute.
--Note, Sharon Sala is also known as Dinah McCall, her pseudonym. Under McCall she writes other suspense/romance.

The Great Derangement: Climate Change and the Unthinkable (Berlin Family Lectures), by Amitav Ghosh

Are we deranged? The acclaimed Indian novelist Amitav Ghosh argues that future generations may well think so. How else to explain our imaginative failure in the face of global warming? In his first major book of nonfiction since In an Antique Land, Ghosh examines our inability—at the level of literature, history, and politics—to grasp the scale and violence of climate change.

The extreme nature of today’s climate events, Ghosh asserts, make them peculiarly resistant to contemporary modes of thinking and imagining. This is particularly true of serious literary fiction: hundred-year storms and freakish tornadoes simply feel too improbable for the novel; they are automatically consigned to other genres. In the writing of history, too, the climate crisis has sometimes led to gross simplifications; Ghosh shows that the history of the carbon economy is a tangled global story with many contradictory and counterintuitive elements.

Ghosh ends by suggesting that politics, much like literature, has become a matter of personal moral reckoning rather than an arena of collective action. But to limit fiction and politics to individual moral adventure comes at a great cost. The climate crisis asks us to imagine other forms of human existence—a task to which fiction, Ghosh argues, is the best suited of all cultural forms. His book serves as a great writer’s summons to confront the most urgent task of our time.

Review
“A short but broad-ranging and consistently stimulating indictment of our era of the ‘great derangement.’ . . . The Great Derangement is a bracing reminder that there is no more vital task for writers and artists than to clear the intellectual dead wood of a vulgarly boosterish age and create space for apocalyptic thinking – which may at least delay, if not avert, the catastrophes ahead.”
  (Guardian)

“In his first work of long-form nonfiction in over 20 years, celebrated novelist Ghosh ‘perhaps the most important question ever to confront culture’: how can writers, scholars, and policy makers combat the collective inability to grasp the dangers of today’s climate crisis? Ghosh’s choice of genre is hardly incidental; among the chief sources of the ‘imaginative and cultural failure that lies at the heart of the climate crisis,’ he argues, is the resistance of modern linguistic and narrative traditions—particularly the 20th-century novel—to events so cataclysmic and heretofore improbable that they exceed the purview of serious literary fiction. . . . In this concise and utterly enlightening volume, Ghosh urges the public to find new artistic and political frameworks to understand and reduce the effects of human-caused climate change, sharing his own visionary perspective as a novelist, scholar, and citizen of our imperiled world.”
  (Publishers Weekly)

“The Great Derangement . . . begins with a simple question—why have the arts (literature and fiction in particular) been unable and unwilling to grapple with the greatest crisis facing the planet, anthropogenic climate change?—and runs in thrillingly unpredictable directions with it.  . . . The Great Derangement bristles with trenchant and dense ideas, expressed with exemplary lucidity and finesse. At a time when the idea of the engagé intellectual is not just unfashionable, but in full-blown retreat, here is a book that triumphantly announces its return.”
  (New Statesman)

“Resistance to the grim realities of climate change is so widespread that the crisis barely figures in literary fiction, notes writer Amitav Ghosh. Branding our era of denial and inertia the Great Derangement, Ghosh looks in turn at literature, history and politics to examine this failure, noting that extreme events such as 2012’s Hurricane Sandy are so freakish that they seem inexpressible. The solution, he argues, lies in collective action as well as scientific and governmental involvement — and in a resurgence in our imaginative capacity to envision human existence anew.”
  (Nature)

“One of its central themes is that writers, artists and filmmakers, including himself, have largely ignored climate change—‘the great derangement’ of the title— simply because it seems too far-fetched and terrifying. But does it really make a difference if authors write about climate change? ‘Making a difference isn’t the point; the point is to examine the meaning of the arts. If we believe that the arts are meant to look ahead, open doors, then how is this huge issue of our time, absent from the arts? It’s like death, no one wants to talk about it.’”
  (Guardian)

“Ghosh’s latest book, The Great Derangement, is a j’accuse issued against all those literary writers who abdicated their social responsibility by being indifferent to the climate crisis—by far the greatest predicament facing humanity. . . . As The Great Derangement emphasises throughout, the crisis of language is at the heart of every human predicament. And now, if our writers are not leading the way, we’re more than doomed.”
  (Sunday Guardian Live (New Delhi))

“For a long time, we have been talking about climate change as a scientific question. In this magnificent book, Ghosh changes the conversation, moving it out of the narrow corridors of science and into the wide precincts of culture, politics, and power. Climate change, he argues, is the result of a set of interrelated histories that promoted and sustained our collective dependence on fossil fuels, and it is a kind of derangement to say we want a different world but act in a way that ensures the continuance of the present one. A clarion call not just to act on climate, but to think about it in a wholly new way.” (Naomi Oreskes, author of The Collapse of Western Civilization: A View from the Future)

“With the deftness of a master storyteller and the powerful vision of a keen political observer, Ghosh traces the complex ways that globalization, empire, and the bourgeois novel are entangled with the history of carbon and our contemporary climate crisis. A thrilling, often brilliant work of synthesis and imagination, The Great Derangement is essential reading for anyone trying to understand what the Anthropocene means for our human future.”
(Roy Scranton, author of Learning to Die in the Anthropocene: Reflections on the End of Civilization)

“Ghosh’s analysis of the ‘era of climate change’ is fascinating, erudite, and unflinching. The Great Derangement is a profoundly original book that spares no one.” (Elizabeth Kolbert, author of The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History)

“Captivating. . . .The lightness and agility of Ghosh’s writing succeeds in keeping all  the urgency  and the shadows of something we cannot really look at: the destiny of mankind.”
  (Giorgio Agamben)

“On very rare occasions, a writer marshals such searing insight and storytelling skill that even a well trodden subject is blown wide open. New connections are made, new futures appear. Ghosh is that kind of writer, and this is that kind of book.” (Naomi Klein, author of This Changes Everything)

“Ghosh has written brilliant fiction, impactful essays. But this work on climate change is the most transformational and powerful piece of writing to come from his pen. The Great  Derangement is a book on our burning planet for those who are burning it and are being burnt with it. Ghosh gives us, in scalding anguish, a masterpiece that reflects the Buddha’'s Adittapariyaya Sutta or ‘The Fire Sermon’ that T S Eliot so plangently re-affirmed in ‘The Waste Land.’ We have here a book that seeks to chastise, challenge, and change our brain's clogged circuitry.”
  (Gopalkrishna Gandhi)

“For decades Ghosh has been telling us exquisite stories of unlikely human connection across geographical and historical boundaries. In The Great  Derangement he goes a step further and sets us amidst the great collectivity of a living and dying planet. This intensely lyrical work from a visionary writer at his best calls for a restitution of the sacred—in its most inclusive form—so that we can face the climate crisis of our times with our finest remaining resources.”
  (Leela Gandhi, Brown University)

“A stupendous return to non-fiction. . . . Ghosh charts our progress, our cultures, history, politics, and its environmental fallout, as delicately and firmly as a Buddhist monk resolutely scattering coloured sand to create a mandala. Pixel by pixel, in distant corners of a canvas, he builds his arguments. Through the three sections of The Great Derangement, he carves a picture out of seemingly disparate global and local events and trends. And when you step back, slowly, inch by inch, a grander story is revealed—our story. We get to see a picture so grotesque and distorted that it is impossible to look away. And we look on, transfixed by a singular conclusion—climate change is on us.”

An excellent, informed
By RaccoonGrrl
An excellent, informed, wide-ranging analysis of what the arts might do in the service of communicating climate change. Ghosh's three part structure ("Stories," "History," "Politics") allows him to cover a remarkable breadth of social conditions which have left us unprepared and perhaps unable to face the climate challenge. Especially pointed in its description of what it sees as the challenges for Asia, and for South Asia specifically, in gearing up for this new era already upon us.

must read
By Coda Far Met
Ghosh's inquiry into the uncanny reality of the Anthropocene reveals connections between colonialism, capitalism, carbon politics, and rising oceans that really have been "unthinkable" in American and European non-fiction. While I would have preferred that Ghosh acknowledge the value of science fiction writing on climate change, I believe this book is necessary reading for anyone engaged in untangling the patterns of thought and action with which we are collectively enacting mass extinction.

Faulty Research
By Em Woodbury
While much of this book brilliantly exposes the problem we have with coming to grips with climate change--in many different types of narratives, such as historically and politically--the one glaring error is Ghosh's assumption that artists and authors aren't properly dealing with climate change in their works. This is so very untrue. I work with, and have worked with, climate change authors for over three years now; some very notable, some just starting out but still producing legitimately life-changing novels--if media paid attention. Maybe because I actively research and talk with authors and read these novels and short stories, I am more aware of what's actually happening--but then that would point to poor research in this area on Ghosh's end.

I agree that climate change in fiction perhaps shouldn't have one particular genre--that it's the story that counts, despite the newer genres readily trying to wrap their hands around global warming (Anthropocene fiction, climate fiction, solarpunk) and the older genres still doing the job (science fiction, literary fiction, speculative fiction, weird fiction).

That brings me to another point, that there does exist the assumption in Ghosh's book that literary fiction is the only fiction that matters when it comes to climate change.

Shouldn't this movement be readily open to all readers and writers, regardless of what genre the work is in? Genre fiction and literary fiction may be miles apart, yet many times the lines are blurry. No reason to be elitist about genres and their potential impacts, especially when global warming, as a huge crazy reality that everyone finds difficult to grasp and talk about, would seemingly call for a tolerance globally to discuss and immerse artistically in whatever way (journalism, art, fiction, etc.) one can. This is not an issue reserved for only a few people.

Allegiance (Star Wars - Legends), by Timothy Zahn

Never before has the incendiary mix of action, politics, and intrigue that has become Timothy Zahn’s trademark, been mmore evident that in this new Star Wars epic. On the heels of the stunning events chronicled in Star Wars: A New Hope, the newly minted heroes of the Rebellion–fledgling Jedi Luke Skywalker, smuggler turned reluctant freedom-fighter Han Solo, and Princess Leia Organa, a bold leader with a world to avenge–must face the harsh realities of the cataclysmic conflict into which they have so bravely plunged. From this point forward, legends will grow, treachery will abound, and lives will be irrevocably altered, in the long, hard fight to counter the fist of tyranny and restore hope to a galaxy too long in darkness.

The destruction of the Death Star by the Rebel Alliance was a decisive blow against the Empire, but Palpatine and his monstrous enforcer, Darth Vader, are no less of a threat. The brutal extermination of Alderaan not only demonstrated the magnitude of their murderous power, but served as a chilling testament to their resolve to crush the Rebel uprising. Standing against them, Skywalker, Solo, and the Princess remain uncertain opponents. Luke is gifted and brave, but unschooled in the power he possesses. Han has doubts about waging someone else’s war–and his contentiousness is one more burden for Leia to bear as she struggles to help keep the Rebellion alive. The three have been sent to mediate a dispute between Rebel Alliance factions in Shelsha Sector–agitating matters by forcing Han to deal not only with pirates, but with his more dreaded enemy, politics. At the same time, Mara Jade–all of eighteen and years away from her fateful meeting with Luke–is serving her evil master, Palpatine, well in her role as the Emperor’s Hand: tracking suspected treachery in the Empire to what may be high places–while trying to stay out of Darth Vader’s way.

But the Rebels will prove to be only one of the Empire’s concerns. For Imperial Stormtrooper Daric LaRone, his faith in the Empire shaken by the wanton destruction of Alderaan, will commit a sudden and violent act of defiance, and take four other enforcers with him, in a desperate bid to elude their masters’ wrath.

Each of these fateful actions, whether sanctioned, secret, or scandalous, will expose brutality and corruption, spur upheavals destined to shake the Empire to its core, and shape momentous events yet to come.

From Publishers Weekly
Five idealistic but fed-up Imperial storm troopers led by Daric LaRone share the stage with young Rebel Alliance crusaders Han Solo, Princess Leia Organa, Luke Skywalker and Chewbacca in this politically fraught but still rollicking early years Star Wars adventure from Hugo-winner Zahn (Star Wars: Outbound Flight). Emperor Palpatine's favorite Sith, Darth Vader, has a new rival, the 18-year-old Countess Mara Jade Claria, whom Palpatine has schooled in the Force to assume the special agent role of "Emperor's Hand." Zahn depicts the intrepid Rebel quartet and the turbulent development of the Alliance while revealing the human faces behind the storm trooper armor of Daric and company, who become unexpected allies of Han and friends once the troopers are on the run after killing a superior officer. The author also underscores Mara Jade's tough-girl charm and blossoming Imperial clout against the background of Palpatine's dedication to Imperial domination and his insidious influence on his minions. This episode will please fans wondering about events between the first and second movies in the original Star Wars trilogy.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School—In this eighth novel set in the Star Wars universe, five Stormtroopers led by Daric LaRone become fugitives when they defy orders to kill a group of defenseless civilians. On the run, the unit turns into a team of self-appointed vigilantes fighting to protect the rights and safety of the citizens of the Empire. A second story line features Mara Jade, a force-wielding apprentice to Emperor Palpatine, and her investigations into a world governor who is stealing Imperial tax money to fund a team of brutal space pirates. LaRone and his team bring a uniquely human touch to the men behind the Stormtrooper armor, while Jade is a highly likable woman filled with enough guile and drive to rival Princess Leia herself. Chronologically, this story takes place between the films A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. While it focuses on the new characters, some of the more familiar names are here as side characters to draw in the fans and drive the plot along. There are some fine moments as a young Luke Skywalker struggles to learn the secrets of the Force and Han Solo questions how involved he wants to become in Princess Leia's rebellion. Jade's and LaRone's plotlines intersect and interweave, leading to a fast-paced climax filled with blaster shoot-outs, star-fighter battles, and Jade's clever tricks with the Force. Tightly plotted and fast paced, Allegiance will appeal to hard-core and intermittent fans alike.—Matthew L. Moffett, Pohick Regional Library, Burke, VA

From Booklist
The dean of Star Wars fiction returns with this exploration of events between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. Luke Skywalker has perhaps the easiest time, as his studying of the Jedi way is mentored and monitored by Obi-Wan Kenobi. Prince Leia is dedicated to the Rebellion but aware of the price this can exact and ambiguous about her feelings toward Han Solo, who is ambiguous about the Rebellion, even though he knows he is a marked man after his role in the destruction of the Death Star. And we meet Mara Jade as a young Hand to the Emperor Palpatine, still developing her abilities as a troubleshooter. In this case, the trouble can shoot back--a band of renegade stormtroopers, half-vigilante and half-pirate. Mara finds good men and women in the service of the Empire, but over all looms the shadow of Darth Vader, who has a short way with both failure and rivals. The author paints a rather large canvas in a comparatively compact book, with his usual spare prose, swift pacing, and eye and ear for details in the world he is depicting. More exploration of the in-between periods in the saga will be heartily welcomed. Roland Green

Easy on the eyes, and not just b/c its got Mara
By Julie
As books go, I found Outbound Flight rather on the boring side, not so with Allegiance. This book, I finished in 2 days. The characters are a mite on the flat side, but Mara Jade pulls through fine. Everything ties together neatly in the end...perhaps too neatly but heck, that's most good fiction out there.

The dialogue's decent, the actions great, the plot twists are good. Overall, Zahn pulls off another lovely star wars novel.

BTW, the idea of including non-clone stormtroopers is only logical, this is a long time after the clone wars. Palpy wouldn't be spending credits on more clones when he can just invest in some nice propaganda and get lots of youngin's ready to defend the Empire.
