One might argue that there is nothing new in the Warhammer 40k universe. Taken individually, each facet of the mytho can be traced to another sf or fantasy writer. Heinlein, Herbert, Asimov and other legends have all made contributions. Nope, nothing all that new.
So what! This initially mismatched collection of classic sci-fi, fantasy and alt history adds up to an extremely interesting universe. Then you remember that the whole thing was the result of a miniatures wargame. Pretty darn impressive when you view it that way.
Execution Hour is a fine effort to examine some varied aspects of the 40k universe. More precisely, it ties the relatively recent Battlefleet Gothic game to its venerable ancestor, War Hammer 40k.
Gordon Rennie gives us good characters, nice plot, fine exposition of various technical, social, metaphysical and psychological aspects of the universe. Against the broad canvas of a massive invasion by the seemingly irresistable forces of Chaos, the workings of a heretofore neglected segment of the great military machine of the Imperium, its Navy, are illustrated in detail.
Certainly, there are some sections which will leave the 40k neophyte scratching his or her head, but you don't need to be able to discriminate between an Adeptus and an Arcanus to enjoy the action and plot in this well crafted novel.

Excellent reading for Battlefleet Gothic players

Battlefleet Gothic is a spaceship wargame set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, making use of miniature model ships to simulate sweeping battles fought over the vast expanse of the galaxy. It is an attractive tabletop game offering a high degree of playability and excitement, and lots of colorful action.
Execution Hour vividly portrays the dramatic ship-to-ship battles and savage hand-to-hand fighting in the game setting. The writing conveys the sense of doom among the desperate defenders of the invaded world perfectly.
A minor criticism may be that the Chaos warships are too fragile in the story. Players of the Battlefleet Gothic game will know that Imperial torpedoes, attack crafts and gunfire are hardly so devastating, and Imperial ships are just a bit so sluggish in action. Ship-to-ship fight is often a rather inconclusive draw, and not so much of brilliant victory after victory as depicted in the book.
Nonetheless, the novel provides very good entertainment value to the game enthusiasts, and is probably one of the best among the Warhammer tie-in novels.

A cause of the respect for battle fleet and adeptus arbitres

When i started to read warhammer 40k series, I was in only for space marine stories.But eventually I've changed my mind abot other battle divisions of the WH40k world.The causes of these changes were Inquisitor series books, gaunt series and this one.Actually, Rennie has made a great job describing the life of the titanic, flying, heavy armed fortress,which is called battle spaceship.I personaly liked the story from different angles.We can observe a young and ambitious lieutenant, wise and brave captain, saint and crazy pilot of the space intercepter and (my personal favourite) one lucky thug/killer. What i liked the most , is the atmosphere of total anarchy on the face of the doomed planet.It's great to see arbitres at work.Really tough guys...Good work,Rennie...Sorry for my grammar,english isn't my native language.

Quick and to the Point!

I am really enjoying this book this quarter. The chapters are short and sweet. You can move along quickly and you are learning. There are few test questions on the evolve website, and that is mainly because the chapters are so small. I love this book! The 'Norm's Notes' are my favorite! Happy to have some 'light reading' this quarter.

Bought for required reading, but actually really like. The chapters are short, easy to read, and have a summary of key points. I like the "Norm's Notes" feature too. Each section also has a really short clinical scenario that applies the information.

The story of nineteenth-century science often tells a tale of a masculinized professionalizing domain. Scientific man increasingly pushed women out, marginalized them and constructed them as naturally feminine creatures incapable of intellectual work, particularly scientific work. Yet many women participated in various scientific endeavours throughout the century. This work asks why, when the waters were so inviting, did women dive deeply into the swirling maelstrom of scientific practice, scientific controversies and scientific writing?
Victorian women certainly recognised that male naturalists were not always willing to welcome them warmly into their inner sanctum of scientific work honour and prestige. Moreover, they recognised the existence of a more general social stigma that thwarted any woman's participation in intellectual endeavours. However, their fascination with algology, botany and entomology led Margaret Gatty, Marianne North and Eleanor Ormerod to reach beyond acceptable gendered roles, to undertake field work, to paint, write, popularize, experiment and discover. Each exhibited a passion for their chosen field, a need for intellectual, artistic and scientific work, and a desire for scientific recognition and renown. This book examines the ability of women to understand themselves and respond to their needs as complex human beings. Within a framework of socially and scientifically constructed norms, these Victorial women use d science as a path to self-awareness and intellectual accomplishment.

About the Author
John Greven was born in 1961 in Oklahoma. At the age of eighteen he was struck by the idea that the “creator of the universe” couldn’t be as limited as he’d been taught. This began a search that took him through various religions, philosophies, metaphysics, and meditation. The search went on at various levels of intensity and commitment for twenty-five years. In 2004 a meeting with John Wheeler contributed to bringing the search to an abrupt end as the simple and obvious truth was seen.

Great Book

I highly recommend this book for those paradoxically seeking the end of seeking. What stunned me most about this book was not the clarity and directness of the pointers, which are unmistakable, but rather the humility that wrote it.

This book is never preachy. There is never the sense that it is "telling" you anything, for example, that you have no choice, or that it's all One, or that you are not a separate self. There is no fundamentalism in this book. It invites you to have a look for yourself.

John never gets lost in the dogma of nonduality, trying to convince everyone that he is nonexistent or that he is not a teacher. He doesn't have to say those things. His absence is felt in the words and the space in which they appear. In his absence is love and humility. I judge good nondual teachings these days, not just by the clarity of the language, but more by the humility of the author. Humility and love are naturally left when the separate self sense is seen through.

Probably the most beautiful thing about this book, to me, is the way it deconstructs its own teaching. It invites you to see that your concepts are false, but it doesn't just replace those with new concepts. So "Oneness" and "awareness" do not feel like new ideas to buy into. When a teaching deconstructs even its own words, like this, it leaves you with nothing. That nothing is appearing as everything. Love is meeting itself everywhere. Thanks John!

A handbook to awakening

Like most spiritual seekers, I've read my fair share of books on the subject but none quite compare to Greven's. In essence, he simply takes you through the process through which your mind gradually and oh-so-subtly moves from servant to master, until you are fully in its grip. "You" and the world then become nothing more than objects identified by the mind as, well, objects, complete with qualities and traits and judgments.

Greven explains in clear detail the challenge each of us faces in letting go of the mind and, by extension, our "selves" and thereby recognizing the pure awareness that we are. The book obviously can't deliver us, but it certainly can point the way.
