Jeffrey Tiel, Ph.D., is an associate professor of philosophy at Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio. He has taught at the United States Military Academy in West Point, NY, as well as Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. He is an award-winning teacher, known for bringing ancient ideas to life. He is also the author of the supernatural thriller, The Search for Melchizedek.

Accessible, engaging, inspiring

Having read Dr. Tiel's other book, The Search for Melchizedek, I am not surprised by the ease of use and accessibility of this latest book. Though this book is a more technical overview of philosophy starting with Socrates and moving on up into contemporary philosophy, it is nonetheless more of a conversation with the reader rather than a text book. Each chapter flows seamlessly into the other, which engages the reader from start to finish. And, of course, the book is also an inspiration, a call to become a lover of wisdom- a Philosopher, and within the pages is the key to do just that. This companion piece to many of the most significant philosophical texts throughout history stands alone as a great teaching book. It would be an excellent addition to any class on human nature or for any one who is interested in philosophy. This book has really helped me take a deeper look at myself. This also would be a useful addition to Bible study groups, as well, because of its useful section on the Christian philosophers.

Relevant, Approachable, and Life-Enriching

I came to this book with little background in philosophy, but a desire to know more about myself as a human being. I was pleasantly surprised to find the content in the book understandable and enjoyable to read. The chapters are short which gave my mind natural pauses and time to digest the content as I worked through the book. Jeffrey Tiel often takes the time to summarize content at the beginning or end of the chapters which I also found helpful in processing the information I was learning. Another thing that made the content approachable was the conversational tone of the book and Tiel's use of humor and illustrations to supplement the ideas he was communicating.

I found the chapters on the Christian philosophers to be very interesting and enlightening. I have a Christian background, but had never heard someone discuss key Christian figures from the perspective of how they fit into the field of philosophy and the stream of thought on human nature. I recommend reading this book on your own for personal insights and reflection, but think it would be even more beneficial if read as part of a reading group or in a classroom setting.

The only book you will ever need on the subject

I often purchase books that I think will be helpful to others and ship them to them.

Human Nature is an excellent "one-stop-shopping" on a couple of thousand years of philosophic thought about man. It is not dry or overly academic, but readable, engaging and fun! After reading myself, the first person I bought it for was a young lady who never had the chance for a college education. She wanted to better herself, had tried to read the ancient philosophers and was never able to slug her way through them. Dr. Tiel's book was perfect for her. She loved it!

Perfect, first and foremost, because it was read and finished - she didn't put it down. It didn't just gather dust on a bookshelf. Second, because the stories and engaging style Dr. Tiel uses, makes what he teaches, memorable. That is what Dr. Tiel is - a teacher. If philosophy in general or the philosophy of the human person, in particular, is not your area, your first love, and you want only one book on the subject, well, this is it. Human Nature is a tour de force of philosophic thought written for the layman, the non-philosopher.

Scan a few pages, you'll see what I mean and be glad that you did.

Grade 1-2?A nameless child introduces the world of cartography. Using the premise that simple drawings can be maps, the book begins with crayon drawings of the floor plans of the girl's room and house. The concept becomes progressively more complex, as her horizons expand from home to street, to town, to state, to country, and finally to the world. Colorful illustrations show a composite of the entire area that is being charted on the facing page. On each successive page, the child points out her street, hometown, state, and country. The process then reverses as she finds the U.S. on a world map and works back down the scale to her own room again. The text concludes with the statement that "...everybody has their own special place on the map." For her town, country, and globe, there's a scenic painting, and then we see her pointing to a map and where she is on it. A great introduction to maps & communities for primary ages

In all my years as an elementary school librarian, this has to be the best introduction to maps that I have seen for primary grades. It is written at a 1.7 reading level, which makes it accessible to first through third grades. In our school, the third grade teachers do a unit on communities, and this title ties in beautifully with that.
I like the way Joan Sweeney starts with, "This is me" and builds the concept through "my room," "my house," "my street," and on to town, state, country and the world. Then she goes backwards until she concludes with "...everybody has their own special place on the map. Just like me."

Simple text inspires days of fun, family activities

My four year son and I love this book. I used this book and the mapping activities it inspires to teach my son our address. We basically recreated this book with all of its maps to establish my child's very special place on the map (his bedroom, our home, our street, our town, our state, etc.)

Excellent book! Not only it teaches about maps (from the map of your room to the map of the world) and geography but it is also excellent for teaching about

* sequences and patterns (each page follows the same template, expanding from the room to the world)

* spacial rotation and visualization (a map is a view from above)

* abstract represntation (a map is a schematic view, a model, of the objects it represents)

* permancence, presistence, and the transient nature of objects and their location (what should be on the map? - toys, books, socks?)

Part Two explores how these conflict zones are played out not just outside but also within Europe, demonstrating that multicultural Europe is fraught with different legacies of violence and postcolonial melancholia. Part Three gives an idea of the kind of future that can be offered to post-conflict societies, defined as contact zones, by exploring opportunities for dialogue, restoration and reconciliation that can be envisaged from a gendered and postcolonial perspective through alternative feminist practices and the work of art and their redemptive power in mobilizing social change or increasing national healing processes. Though strongly anchored in postcolonial critique, the chapters draw from a range of traditions and expertise, including conflict studies, gender theory, visual studies, (new) media theory, sociology, race theory, international security studies and religion studies.

I read this book many years ago and was thinking about the "nine mile walk" for some reason recently, so bought the book to read
that story again. Fun to read again; dated to be sure, but still fun.
