By stressing the effectiveness of these deadly decisions as deterrents to others, this work maintains that an earlier and wider reliance on execution would have strengthened the Confederacy sufficiently to force a negotiated end to the war, thus saving many Confederate and Federal lives.

Death and Discipline

This book is a valuable introduction to an untouched area of Civil War research. A must have for everyone with an interest in the Civil War or in a North Carolina family, regiment, brigade or county. Detailed and poignant insight into discipline, desertion, death, courts-martial and execution for each North Carolina regiment is found in records and contemporary comments.

Quotes from many, many letters home and from officer reports give us a whole other view of the Civil War - that of the men who deserted their companies and tried to go home. The premise of the book is that if the South had unfailingly applied the penalty of death for desertion early on, the whole war would have been different. So many stories are here - it is just fascinating. Excellent research!
If you have a long lost relative who was conscripted into the Confederate Army and never came back from the war, you may find out the reason in this book. Organized by the army,corp, division, regiment, and brigade you can look for names in the chapter headings or in the index. Very interesting for hard core Civil War buffs and gives a different perspective on the war.
