Must-have resource for the failure analysis practitioner

The failure analyst must have enormous scope of knowledge and understanding in two general areas: (i) material properties, material selection, and the manufacturing processes used to make them; and (ii) failure mechanisms including fracture and corrosion. A third area of knowledge is that of industrial processes and equipment, which is so vast that it cannot possibly be contained. The failure analyst needs to be a quick study in this area.
While no single volume could possibly be large enough to encompass the enormous quantity of knowledge required by even in just the first two areas described, this volume offers a broad overview with a substantial amount of theory. Being fairly empirical in my own approach to failure investigation, what I appreciate is the substantial portion given over to failures prevalent in specific types of equipment, including: bearings, fasteners, gears, pipelines, and boilers, to name a few. This addresses the third area of knowledge nicely.
Integrating all of this information in a clear and understandable manner was a significant challenge, one that ASM and their many esteemed contributers have met.
I should add that I find this volume more useful, less esoteric, and certainly more practical than the (green) volume that followed it. It arrived on time, in pristine condition.

The Metals Handbook is a wonderful reference for anyone engaged in failure analysis. The information is well presented, clear and thorough, and accessible to the non-metallurgist as well as to professional metallurgists and metallurgical engineers.
