A great extra story of Sherlock
By Brittany Moore
Another great story in the Young Sherlock Holmes series. At first I thought this one was an alternate part from the book, from when they go to meet Mycroft. After reading along a bit further I realized that it was actually it's own little bit. I'm always a sucker for a story that takes place in a mental institute. I wished this could have been a bit longer, but any amount of Sherlock is better than no Sherlock.

First Line:
"It was one of those rare days in London when the sun shoe on clean streets and the air did not smell of rotten vegetables and horse dung."

Favorite Line:
"He was bald, apart from a fringe of black hair running around the back of his head like a small curtain."

You'll be left hanging with many unanswered questions
By Sherlock
Andrew Lane has so far written 4 Young Sherlock Holmes novels:

1. Young Sherlock Holmes: Death Cloud
2. Young Sherlock Holmes: Red Leech (reissued as 'Rebel Fire' in the US)
3. Young Sherlock Holmes: Black Ice
4. Young Sherlock Holmes: Fire Storm

The first 2 were very good and I look forward to reading books 3 and 4.

Anyone reading the Kindle sample of this short story 'Young Sherlock Holmes: Bedlam' before buying will not see the note from Andrew Lane because it is at the very end pages. He says there that this was originally intended to be included in BLACK ICE but was removed from that book. He tells us that this short story now takes place in the interval between BLACK ICE and the subsequent book FIRE STORM.

This short story is well written and enjoyable, but I think it should have been included as part of a larger book for two main reasons:

1. The ending is quite predictable - we know Sherlock must somehow get out of Bedlam because he certainly won't spend the rest of his life in a lunatic asylum.

2. More importantly, this story finishes rather abruptly without conclusively resolving major issues:
Who arranged to kidnap Sherlock and why?
Who is the 'ghost' that walks the corridors by night, and why?
Sherlock thinks the boy who preceded him in his cell was probably murdered, but no clear motive or resolution is provided for readers so we are left with this theory.
The head Resident Physician Dr William Rhys Williams is clearly under suspicion and we are told that Sherlock's tutor, Amyus Crowe, will report these events to the authorities so they can investigate. That is how the story ends.

Several interesting things happen in these 35 pages, but readers seeking definitive explanations and resolutions are left hanging in mid air with only unanswered questions and speculations. I'm rating this 3 stars because I don't think this is a proper way to treat people, especially without giving clear advance warnings that this is the case. Readers would have been better served if this had been included as part of a larger book, or if the author had lengthened it a bit to bring a sense of resolution and closure to the above issues.

Decent short story
By Chris Brunner
I picked this up before I started reading this series because I had intended to start with this one to see if the Young Sherlock Holmes series was worth reading. When I read a bit more about this Novella it was said that this was to be a part of the third book. I decided to wait a bit and start Death Could first so I could know any recurring characters.

This was decent and an entreating read. You can tell it was meant for a bigger work because the beginning of this story whirls by so quickly I had to go back to make sure I caught all the information I should have. The ending was also very abrupt; Sherlock sort of explains everything in one short section and quickly tells how he got there. Still was very entertaining and I am glad I read it.
